History of the Univeristy of Wyoming Dome

I have heard this from many sources, spanning multiple decades of being Wyoming fans. What could have been...and what basically castrated any and all hopes of Wyoming athletics (football primarily) remaining nationally competititve. Take it for what it is worth...many sources spanning multiple decades, and a lot of whiskey mixed in.

When Fred Ackers took the UW coaching job in 1975, he vowed to make Wyoming what it was in the 60's. A national power. He vowed to be competing for national championships. He was going to do it all, and do it right, from the ground up. And it started in 1975...although his record wasn't great (2-9), he did have the base set, as evident by posting an 8-4 record in 1976, and having 2 players selected first round in the NFL draft (Aaron Kyle - Dallas, and Lawrence Gaines - Detroit). And we all know about the Fiesta bowl.

But why did Fred really quit before our Fiesta Bowl trouncing in Tempe? Many blame Texas coming back around and tossing the offer his way. But that wasn't it...that was the easy out. What it really was...was the fact that Fred had been working hard to have a dome built at UW, it was his passion, it was what would be required to take Wyoming to the next level. It was going to house all sports, all administrative offices, and be the cutting edge of facilities, nationally. There were practice facilities, weight rooms, locker rooms, meeting rooms, booster rooms, trophy rooms, etc., etc. It was actually nicer and better than what turned out to be the carrier dome in Syracuse...before the carrier dome in Syracuse was even a thought.

In late 1976...Fred was denied. And that, my Wyoming fan friends, is what got us here today. Fred saw the writing on the wall...he knew that Wyoming was too "good 'ol boy politically driven" to make it happen. Fred took the first (actually second) offer that came his way. Oh, and the cost? Just under $50 million. Doesn't seem like much these days. And sure, we have had some "blips" but those blips, have happened, what, 3 times in 36 years? Maybe 3. Not sure 1996 was that great.

And what the hell is my point? Looks like CSewe learned (or is learning) from our mistake from 35+ years ago. Hopefully UW will as well.

if wyoming had a dome it would be what Idaho has. Not interested... I like the War and if we don't fill it completely week in and week out we don't need a stadium bigger. I just hope that the university is making plans to renovate the parts of the stadium that have not been touched in years. The westside needs a facelift and overall the stadium could use some upgrades in consession areas but I don't mind the War and think it's a great venue for college football.

Any truth to the rumor I heard she there......that Coors offered to build...help build it if they could sell beer and advertising?

There's probably a lot of veracity in that, but one thing that's changed quite a bit since his tenure (since the late 80's in fact) is the weakening of the Northern counties' hegemony in the state legislature. Since the major re-apportionment of the State over about a 25 year period, there's far more equity at the level Ackers would have been dealing with. The upshot- that was then, this is now. When Ackers tried he probably had no clue about the power and contempt held by the North over the South in Cheyenne. If all things are equal, now's a far better political climate, from a baseline anyway, than the 70's or 80's. We need someone with the cajones and visions to take another swipe at it, in some form...

Been going to games for years and for the most part, the weather is good. If you're afraid of snow, dome the roads in and out of Laramie.

Everything I've been told is that this is completely untrue. I've heard various versions that it was Coors and Budweiser who offered to do it. Neither is true. And it really doesn't make economic sense. I have no idea what a dome would cost, but would a company really get their money back in a reasonable amount of time just by selling beer at the War? I know we drink a lot, but if we had to pay $6-$8 per beer, we'd all end up bringing our own anyway. :D

Completely agree. And it wouldn't solve the problem of getting to the game in bad weather...

GO POKES!

The point isn't (and wasn't) to dome the mother fucker for us everyday fans, it was to dome it to build an ATHLETIC EMPIRE...that would continually attract better recruits, keep dirtbag politicians warm, and cater to hoity toity folks that have a lot of dough.

I, personally, like sitting outside, etc., but this thing is bigger than me.

There was discussion...but not to fund the whole thing. The discussion between Coors & UW, was for Coors to be a major sponsor. Like Village Inn and Union Wireless. LMAO.

I think that is the real problem with Wyoming Athletics in general. It doestn' matter if your a hardcore basketball fan or football fan. From abour mid October on it's hit and miss regarding the weather. So alot of people won't buy tickets for 35 bucks a pop when their is a chance of getting snowed out of that game. I think that is possibly why the CSU game was pushed back from the last game of the season, they figure they will get more fans here if it isn't snowed out. It's not so much the cold weather as it is closed or dangerous roads.

Just one question. Do you think a domed stadium would have any effect on our ability to recruit quality athletes to Laramie?

I don't think it would. I think what hurts laramie is that it is cold and just overall a tough place to live in the winter time. The majority of high end recruits come from warm climates like Texas or California. I think Laramie just isn't for everyone and many people just can't picture themselves living somewhere that small and that cold.

What???? Wyokie told me Wyoming is eternally doomed because of BYU.

No. We were doomed by two things.....

1. Black 14
2. Idiot state politicians who can't seem to think ahead 10-20 years.

I hope (but COMPLETELY doubt) all of this will finally get the admin at UW and the city council to finally get off their asses but I doubt it!

It amazes me that we were a National power without a dome before Akers, so I doubt this is what got Wyo where we are today. Besides we all know the Black-14 had A LOT to do with the drop. If we didn't have that incident who knows where Lloyd Eatons Career would've gone with the Cowboys. Our 70's programs wouldn't have been so embarrassing and We would have grown in leaps and bounds at a critical time in college football.
But after the B-14 and 70's decade we have been on the outside looking in. If Roach would've coached longer than years as well it might have helped too.
Having two "Mediocre Joe's" from the 90's on to now, and having a lost it all with "Crown Vic" And the recruiting woe's of Dimel have got us to where we are now.
So, don't make excuses and rant and rave just because you always wanted a dome. Syracuse has never been a "TRUE" power in their dome, what makes you think we would be? And yes, I know they have been good over the years with years of mediocrity or badness in between...Just like Wyo.

Yes....but to what degree is determined by how good the dome is.

A domed stadium would have instantaneously turned Wyoming into an instant athletic "empire"?

Ludicrous is a word that comes to mind.
