I've always wished UW would just lean into what they really are. They need to quit pretending that they are a top tier research university in a beautiful place with lots of things to do/opportunities.
Here's the reality: UW is a school where you can get an adequate education at a decent value in a small town set in a barren landscape. It's cold, and probably windy, for 8 months out of the year. But those 4 months from June-September provide some of the best weather you can find anywhere in the country during that time. There aren't any nightclubs, or really any nightlife in general, besides going to a party/bar and drinking copious amounts of alcohol.
My message to prospective students/athletes would be: "If you want what everybody else wants, go someplace else - you won't be happy here. But if you are different - someone who values the hard work, the grind, the toughness that it takes to live in a place like Laramie, then you will excel here. Only tough SOB's make it here - come join your kind".
