Bolling's situation is kinda precarious. From what I understand, he really needs to do well academically at LCCC to get back and be eligible for football in the fall. Hopefully, since he doesn't have to concentrate on spring ball, he'll be able to do it. But not practicing with the team right now doesn't do him any favors.
I still think he's the best wide receiver we have, but I went to practice today and from what I saw, the wideout situation isn't as bad as most people think--fortunately. It's not exactly deep, but there are some athletes in the unit who could help keep things afloat--as long as they avoid injuries (and in Bolling's case, academic problems). Donate Morgan made a spectacular catch today, running at full speed and leaping up to make a finger-tip grab while falling on his back. I didn't see him make any mistakes during drills, and Glenn said he beat D-Mo in a foot race this offseason. All the coaches expect him to be a starter, and he's on the top of the depth chart right now. I think he could really put up some great numbers if he stays healthy. David Leonard gave us a taste of what he can do last year, and Bob Cole liked what he saw out of him today. And Chris Johnson has blazing speed and solid field vision. I expect him to have a breakout year in '08 (which will be his final season).
The one guy who impressed me today, though, was Travis Burkhalter. He's super-fast, and he made a few nice grabs. He's just a sophomore, so I'm sure there's a learning curve there. But I think he should be able to come in and contribute quite a bit.
Obviously the success of the position will depend a lot on Bolling, but I hope that while he's getting his grades up he's also working hard on making sure he doesn't lose a step on the field.
