Granberry is a Cowboy

With this news, what will the starting lineup be for next year? Adams, Granberry, Hankerson, Cooke, and Nance. Kenote Vernon sounds like a gamer, does he battle Cooke for a starting spot? Shyatt said that Haldorsen has the most upside out of any Cowboy, is he in the fray for a starting spot? Thoughts?

Only for sure starters I see would be Granberry, Hankerson, and Nance, the Pg position will be between Adams and Grabau. The other forward Cooke and Vernon.

A lot of you are sleeping on Keonta Vernon. The dude is skilled and has the drive and passion to make a difference. This fall is going to great. From no depth to a sudden log jam at all postions but the 4/5 is a great place to be. And lets not forget about Trey Washington. Fran Fraschilla doesn't give the accolades he did to just anyone. We could be a completely different team next year.

This is pretty much how I see it as well. The only wild card is whether Haldorson gets in the mix at the other forward spot. He wasn't as ready to contribute physically last year as Cooke was (not surprising considering Haldorson is 3 years younger), but after a year of growth and D1 strength development he may be a factor.

Huge get IMO. Too much potential baggage that came with Shabazz's lil bro. I am thinking that we may have pulled our offer because we knew we were landing Granberry. I think this is shaping up to be our best team since Shyatt's previous stop in town (as long as no injuries or Luke Martinez repeats).

I think that Grabau will start at the PG with Adams at the 2 guard and Hankerson at the 3. I think Granberry and Sobey will be coming off of the bench for the Guard rotation with those 3.

Shyatt has already stated he thinks Grabau is the PG of the future for this team and with the way Granberry shoots so many 3's I think Shyatt brings him off the bench along with Sobey to bring a spark to the team or maybe some instant offense as long as they are hitting their shots. Hankerson and Adams are too good to be coming off of the bench and both can get to the basket. Grabau distibutes the ball pretty well and is more of the PG mentality than Adams is and he can hit the open 3. I don't see Granberry starting over him with his style of play. I don't see Adams as a PG either with his style of play he is more of a slashing 2 guard. Maybe I'm wrong and Shyatt promised Granberry a starting spot to get him here. Shyatt said he might play a 4 guard lineup so that would mean Grabau, Adams, Granberry, Hankerson and Nance.

The PG and Center positions are the wildcard. Grabau looked very slow on defense and got beat a ton, this may give Adams the edge at PG.

Cook really lacked on offense and showed lack of focus at times... How will he progress this offseason

If Vernon comes in and lives up to the hope he may start at the 4 and Nance may be our Center.

A lot will depend upon how these incoming freshman perform. I do believe that Granberry will start.

Do you have a link for that? I'm betting he said that before Adams broke out. Josh Adams is already a better basketball player than Grabau and his ceiling is much higher. Grabau is a smart, solid guard, but he's no star. We'll see how he compares to Granberry, but Granberry's size and shooting makes him a lock to start. In my opinion, the 5th starting spot will be a competition between Grabau, Sobey, Washington, Haldorson, Cooke, and Vernon with the rest of the guys having a tiny chance. I expect Grabau to be the 5th starter unless Derek Cooke Jr learns to shoot free throws or Austin Haldorson puts on 30 pounds. The lineup should look something like this:

G: Adams
G: Grabau
F: Granberry
F: Hankerson
F: Nance

Wyoming will not have to rely on their unproven front court depth to provide starter minutes with this lineup. This will give Haldorson and Cooke another year to mature before they are expected to be major contributors. Until then, they'll be able to fill roles as a stretch 4 and an athletic rebounder when needed. This lineup will stretch out the back court depth, but Wyoming can handle that with Bentz and Sobey. This lineup would also make for a great 2-3 matchup zone, even though Shyatt hates zones.

I don't have a link to support it right off the top of my head. To be honest I heard it on a couple of different games that were broadcast on the tv where the announcers said it. I might have read it somewhere as well but I can't remember. It was actually toward the end of the season after Adams was already a proven player. They were saying that Shyatt said Grabau is the PG of the future at Wyoming. So based on that info it made me belive that either Granberry would be the 6th man or Shyatt would go with a 4 guard lineup which he was stated as saying today. Now, I don't know if Shyatt meant he was going to start a 4 guard lineup or if he would just play a 4 guard line up at different times.

I looked up Granberry's stats and I know that NowherePoke did as well and he gave a good break down on them in another thread. The concern we were talking about with Granberry is that he seems to only shoot 3's for the most part and does not go to the basket much and against the better competition he didn't have a very good shooting percentage.

He seemed to have his better games against his conference foes which were weaker competition. He will be facing better competition in the MWC so that was a concern. I have not seen Granberry play so I don't want to judge a kid on his ability without having done so but just breaking down his stats he seems to struggle shoooting the ball when playing against better competition and if he only shoots 3's and never goes to the basket then that could be a problem and why it led me to think he might be the 6th man off of the bench.

Again I have not seen the kid play so I don't want to judge him without doing so. Maybe you know more about Granberry and can give us a good breakdown on him. :thumb:

I haven't seen him play either, I'm just giving my opinion. NowherePoke provided a solid comparison between Martinez and Granberry. I don't expect Granberry to be a Martinez caliber player, but I think he can be a solid alternative. As a 3rd or 4th option he should be solid in my opinion. One point I would make is that he will not be the best player at Wyoming as opposed to probably being the best player at North Florida. He'll have Nance, Hankerson, and Adams who should draw attention away from him. I'm fine with a guy who is a three point specialist(especially with the current lack of three point shooting) as long as he can play defense. Nance will see a lot less double teams when Granberry is on the court which is one of the biggest benefits of Granberry.

It should be exciting to see how things play out, there will be a lot of competition this offseason. Hopefully that pushes some of these guys to another level.

Frankly Granberry is a lock to start you aren't getting a one year transfer to come off the bench. Hankerson Granberry and Nance are locks to start the PG position will be either Grabau or Adams probably both will play a ton there. One main reason you start only one of them is size we got beat a lot because we were a tiny team with Hankerson and Granberry that is two gaurds that are 6-4. I think Adams is a better athlete, but Grabau is better smarts wise so that battle will be interesting. The forward position will be a battle with Cooke Haldorson and Vernon battling for the starter, however one nice thing is a bench with two of those Sobey and one of Grabau or Sobey, much deeper. I would redshirt Washington and Herndon just because we can and it will help them develop.

There's no way Grabau starts at the 2. He couldn't get any separation or guard anyone there last year and it killed us.

If he starts, it's at the 1. This league is too good to have a guy like Grabau matching up with most teams most athletic player. Who knows how good Washington will be but I highly doubt he redshirts. Most kids play these days.

Yeah, I think the battle at the point will be very interesting in the pre-season. Adams is a much better defender and we know Shyatt values defense, however Grabau seems more suited at this to running the point on offense.

Either way, I think we see a 8/9 man rotation including the following:

Guards:

Adams
Grabau
Sobey
Granberry
Hankerson

Forwards:

Nance
Cooke
Vernon and/or Haldorson

I expect Herndon to redshirt and McManamen, Sellers, and Washington to see only occasional minutes based on blowouts, foul trouble, injuries, etc.

I don't see much value in saying who the starting 5 is going to be. with a team that doesn't have much depth, the starting 5 translates to game minutes... but this team has so much depth in the 1-3 positions that I expect many different sets on the floor.

our outside shooting is going to improve next year, and I think it will improve greatly... people are comparing granberry to martinez, but really the addition of hankerson, who "will" be the scorer next year imo, is what will define our ability to generate points. i think hankerson can shoot the three better than anybody on the team

adams and grabau bring different things to the table, but they should be competing for minutes. we don't want to put two short guards on the floor together unless we have too.

I love the addition of granberry, as it will allow us to grow vernon. vernon's outside game needs some work. I still think vernon will play plenty next year. vernon was awarded the player of the year for his district.

inside.... nance is going to be asked to shoulder alot more responsibility and minutes. cooke and halderson will be playing.

whats cool is now we could run a big back court set if we want

hankerson
granberry
vernon
cooke
nance

nobody under 6'5 in that line up

we have much more options this year than we have had in a long time.

i think next year will show a team that plays more inside out, with two different catch and shoot options on the perimter.

and the chemistry between granberry and hankerson will be fun... they grew up together... look for lots of assits between the two

I completely agree carbon, I am very excited at the possibility of pretty decent depth this year, as well as the option to throw many combinations of line ups out onto the floor during games. I am excited to see what it brings next year and hopefully we can go dancin. Go Pokes!

I think Granberry, Nance, and Hankerson are the only sure starters for next year.

Would not mind if Nance added some muscle though. He's got the height, but another 10-20lbs of muscle could help him go a long way.
