good spread offense/bad defense

So, what is the reason the defense has gotten worse whilst the offense is starting to get things
figured out?

I noticed a recurring theme in that article. Almost every defensive coach they talked to said that going against the spread on offense makes the defense play soft. Seems to me like that may be a big part of our problem.
