Good news

If confirmed, sweet. 2 guys with a lot of experience coming back. Mertens will help out on the line and Harris was probably our best tackler on defense.

How about J.J. Quinlan? Didn't he tweet something about possibly trying for another season of eligibility since DC was fired?

I read somewhere he is done playing.

I believe that Devyn Harris and Patrick Mertens have both been granted medical redshirts.
What about Finley?
He played 1 game then got hurt.

Or do they apply for the red-shirt after their eligibility would have been done? In his case, after this coming season.

Ringlosby and Quinlan were tweeting eachother and Quinlan said that the NCAA denied his medical redshirt since he practiced while injured.

I am pretty sure Finley got his medical, since he got hurt in the first half of the first game and was unable to practice the rest of the season

Typically they wait until his normal eligibility is over before applying for a medical waiver. However that isn't mandatory, you can apply for a waiver at any point, it's just normally done at the end.
