He played 1 game then got hurt.

Or do they apply for the red-shirt after their eligibility would have been done? In his case, after this coming season.

Ringlosby and Quinlan were tweeting eachother and Quinlan said that the NCAA denied his medical redshirt since he practiced while injured.

I am pretty sure Finley got his medical, since he got hurt in the first half of the first game and was unable to practice the rest of the season

Typically they wait until his normal eligibility is over before applying for a medical waiver. However that isn't mandatory, you can apply for a waiver at any point, it's just normally done at the end.
