Golf Team Finishes in 22nd! SWEET!

Nice job UW! 22nd of 24 teams. Would have been 24th, but 2 teams sent their "D" group.

Oh, and it was our hosted event in Palm Whatever.

Should have built that practice facility faster! Hitting into nets always improves your game. Oh wait...they already do that in the field house. Maybe not.

It's just tough to build a competitive program at UW. I think you can make a solid case that Laramie is the worst location in D1 for a golf program. Let's count the ways:

1. Cold - Laramie has the second coldest mean annual temperature of any division one locale (Grand Forks is slightly colder now that UND has moved to D1) and the shortest growing season.

2. Wind - Golf is all about consistency and it's difficult to build consistency while playing in rapidly varying elements.

3. Jacoby - Sucks.

4. Home course advantage - We play our own tournament two states away.

I think weather and location are horrible excuses for sucking at football and basketball, but are pretty legit when it comes to golf.

Agreed. Someone should send a telegraph to Larry Hicks about the golf team.

Just for fun, I'm going to list the sports/clubs that are on my personal list of interest; i.e. that I look up scores and results on. My personal list equals exactly jack squat, obviously. I'm all for kids from eastern Europe getting a college education playing tennis, I just don't care if they win or lose wearing brown and gold.
1a. Basketball
1b. Football
3. Rugby
4. Wrestling

Last. Everything else and women's sports. I like Legerski's teams, I read where they did really well in the WNIT a few years ago, but I don't follow it.

And yes, I'm a terrible fan. I didn't see the trick play JJ Raterink and Bouknight pulled out at the Las Vegas Bowl because I was so disgusted directly leading up to it. In fact, I believe my tv was kicked in or broken. Don't remember.

I think I had a stroke when Tiller called the safety; my face still looks like Popeye.

Anyone else care to make a list? I'd be interested in reading it.

NowherePoke, as an alumnus of our College of Agriculture, I have to say that your comment about the shortest growing season is even more damning when applied to our selection of Laramie for the location of our Land Grant (A & M) University. In my mind, the choice was indefensible. The growing season is so short that we cannot grow any cultivated crops in the Laramie Valley at all.

hithere: Your comment about tennis seems similar to the sentiments that drove out our skiing program. That line of thinking should have threatened our basketball program when we had multiple Nigerians and Western Europeans donning the Brown & Gold. I, for one, am glad to see some Germans who will be adding to the diversity on campus while playing football for our Pokes.

I would even go so far as to say that the University of Wyoming needs to attract a more international student body to campus, via sports or other means, in order to better educate the rest of the student body about the cultural nuances that are growing in importance as the economy that they will be working in become ever more globalized.

Finally, chauvinistically-speaking, I also have a particular bias for the presence of Eastern European (ladies) on campus, even if I did not expect that to be the case back when I started school as a freshman. Therefore, I say, keep tennis. It is even a game that can be played indoors.

Did Marc Bailey ever try to play a varsity tennis match for UW?

My top sports to pay attention to and attend games for are:

#1 Men's Basketball

#2 Football

#3 Volleyball

Other team sports as time and other priorities permit. I am sure proud of the successes of Olympic sports and, to me, they are where one finds the most well-rounded student-athletes. I will watch a track meet on T.V. and will watch a women's game with my daughter when she wants to watch.

Maybe about the hypothetical basketball line of thinking. But if basketball went away, I would hazard a guess that there would be a more vocal uprising than skiing not being a recognized "team."

To clarify my point, if everything but Football and Basketball went away, I wouldn't be too upset. I realize that this won't happen and is probably being a bad fan, but that was the point of my list. I'm glad that kids are getting a good education from golf or tennis, I just don't follow those sports. I also am gaining some insight into what others "value" here too. If I had daughters, I'm sure I'd probably shift my priorities on interest too. If they played soccer, I'd most certainly want them to follow UW women's soccer. I'm not deriding your opinion on Germans, I just don't care about the diversity. Whether or not they're from Baggs or Stuttgart, I personally don't have an emotional investment.

sadly i do not recall finding them ladies back when I was in laramie. Was there tennis 96-00? i'm kicking myself.

Well, I'm glad I've found the Dead Peters Bench to talk with you old farts.

Everyone knows that Athletics and American Football are the 2 most important sports for a college to compete in.

You have to think of 22nd as pretty good. Put the positive spin on it and say, well, at least 22 is a power number in numerology.

Yes. Athletics is a sport of multiple events. The entire world uses the word "athletics" for the sport of athletics.
It is my sport. Today I raced a race of 1500 metres indoors in my sport of athletics.

Most Americans I know say the word athletics when they really should say sport or sports.
The Athletic Department should really be something like the Sports Department. Or Sports and Games. Or Competitions or something else BECAUSE you know I'm right.....and that's just the way......it is.......

Blame Evanston. They chose the nuthouse over the University.

it just sounded like you said athletics when you should have been mentioning a specific sport since you had mentioned football.

Uh oh. You are gonna pay for that comment!

My theory, and that of my friends, always was, if it has a ball, it is a sport. No ball, no sport. But then, we realized we included bowling and hacky sack with that requirement...so that doesn't work. Oh, and we left out swimming so that didn't work either.

I don't know anymore. I guess if you sweat it could be a sport? Yes, for all you dirty mind bastards, it is called sport fucking for a reason.
