Former UW standout continues to live NFL dream

LARAMIE (AP) — Of the 100,000 high school seniors who play football every year, only 215 will ever make an NFL roster. That is 0.2 percent.

And of the 9,000 players who make it to the college level, only 310 are invited to the NFL scouting combine from which teams make their draft picks. That’s 3 percent.

But one of the players who beat all those odds is former University of Wyoming offensive lineman Adam Goldberg.

The starting right tackle for the St. Louis Rams will be entering his eighth pro season next fall.

“Coming into the league as an undrafted free agent, you can’t really hope for too much,” Goldberg said in a phone interview from his home in St. Louis. “The odds are stacked pretty heavily against you.

“I guess you can say that I have been extremely blessed to play as long as I have.”

The 6-foot-7, 309-pounder started 44 of 45 games during his UW career (1999-02) under coaches Dana Dimel and Vic Koenning.

During that time, he was twice named first-team All-Mountain West Conference. Recently, he was one of only two UW players named to the MWC’s All-Decade team. The other was wide receiver Jovan Bouknight (2002-05).

Following his senior season, Goldberg signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings. That was a dream come true since Goldberg played his high school ball in Edina, Minn.

He spent the 2003 season on the Vikings’ practice squad. In 2004, he started the last six games of the season as well as two postseason contests. In 2005, he started 12 games at right tackle.
