Ghaali Muhammad

Hey guys long time lurker, longer time Cowboy fan, first time poster.

I just wanted to let you know I am one of Ghaali Muhammad's teachers at the university. I spoke with him last week about football and he told me that he is 1.) Feeling better and will definitely play next season, and 2.) moving back to defense next season.

I always thought taking him off defense was a dumb move, glad to see Coach C is admitting that the D really needs his help.

Also, Ghaali told me that Oliver Schoder is better and taking hits in practice now, so he would be back next season too!

Good to hear about Ghaali. Too bad English wasn't afforded Ghaali & Schober...he probably would still be the DC. Tormey will be glad to take the credit...especially with those credentials.

Isn't one of the main jobs of the DC to make sure that the players can tackle? That seemed to be a problem all 3 years with English as DC. The starters like Biezuns, Knapton, Gipson, and Hendricks could all tackle, but the rest all struggled to wrap up and bring people down. At the best of times.

Could be, or it could be their position coach. Or how the DC was instructed to do things. Lots, and lots, and lots, and lots of VERY gray area here.

And to the point...Ghalli & Schober could tackle.

I always thought the weakness of the D was the linebackers. The line itself seemed ok, the coverage wasn't bad, just the guys in between were all really bad.

Ghaali in my opinion was one of our best linebackers, and Schober was no joke either. It was a MASSIVE loss without them and it showed up in our inability to stop the run.

Also of note is Schober was the kickoff specialist before he was injured; I expect he'll probably return that that position next year. Maybe we can reliably kick into the end zone now?

that and I think they are moving kickoffs up 5 yds this year. helps a team like wyo more than others. might be able to match the other teams field position better, which matters a lot.

I always felt like our tackling was piss poor, The fact we would try to shoulder tackle and not wrap up cost us a lot of big plays. The Hillman 99 yard run was all about the lack of wrapping up and shoulder tackling. It needs to be corrected and it has allowed offenses to fly down the field on us!

So now who are our runningbacks? We will have Sutton and Kankolongo... I liked Ghali in the backfield. So we lose Ghali and Doctson on offense... Hopefully some recruits step up

We have the kid from Minnesota comig in as a RB. And 1 or 2 others as well, I believe.

I don't believe Evan Williams has made it. It sounded like he was enrolling for Spring Semester, but I don't think it ever happened. Not positive, but I thought I read somewhere that he went to another Iowa school.

He went to a JUCO last year because he was having some issues with his academics or something transferring over, but as soon as he could, he was one of our first commits of this recruiting class.

Kanko, Sutton, Miller?

Saw a tweet by Herron saying 4.28...wonder if that's his 40 time? If so, maybe he should slow down and work on hanging onto the ball more.

Evan Williams (isn't that a bourbon?) update for all that didn't see it:

Northern Iowa Panthers

The Panthers stayed close to home for half of the 20 high school players they signed Wednesday, inking 10 Iowa high school prospects to letters of intent, including five from the Quad-Cities area.

UNI's class includes four all-state players from Iowa as well as a pair of junior-college transfers from the state, running back Evan Williams of Iowa Western and defensive lineman Ricky Taylor of Iowa Central.

Instate players to sign with UNI include offensive linemen Trevor Hanson of West Des Moines Valley and Robert Rathje of Benton Community, defensive back Tim Kilfoy of Davenport Assumption and linebacker Nate Shaw of Bettendorf.

Coach Mark Farley signed one quarterback, Justin Black. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound native of Michigan played at Barron Collier High School in Naples, Fla., last season. He threw for more than 1,000 yards in each of his three years as a starter.

I don't care who we name the starter as long as they run north and south and hit the holes hard. That's why Ghaali was my favorite back last year. He didn't dance around, he made a decision and didn't hesitate or second guess himself. Our backs don't have the luxury of being able to hang around in the backfield for an extra second to see if another hole develops. I'll take a 4 yard gain every time over an abundance of 1 yarders that yield an occasional 20 yard TD. Ghaali will contribute wherever he plays, so I guess I'm okay with him moving back to defense if that's what the coaches feel is best for the team. I just hope that our next backs run as hard as he did.

It seems whoever we gave the ball to averaged close to 5 yards a carry, so moving Ghaali back to D where we need him is a good thing. Losing AA quantities of carries is what worries me. I hope this doen't mean even more designed run plays for Smith. One awkward hit and we could be looking at another bad season, especially after losing our other highly rated QB who most of us had high hopes for.

I didn't. Smith proved himself. I don't root for backups. I just hope they are prepared enough to do their job. Manage the offense. There's a reason he was backup, and there's a reason he left.

I am all for Muhammed returning to LB. I saw enough from Miller last year and thought he could be our full time RB so I would play him there.
