I am pumped about Mark Nzeocha. I completely agree with his coach about him being a 4 or 5 star recruit had he played high school football in the US. Yeah, he hits hard, but what I like about him the most is his ability to consistently read the offense and get himself into position to make a play. He is a force in both the run game and the pass game, which is exactly what you want to see from a safety.

I sure hope the staff decides to keep him at safety. He has very good size and my fear is that DC may want to move him to the OLB position. I think that would be a major mistake.

I don't necessarily see it as bad if he went to LB. DC might want to try to make him a hybrid type LB who covers and stops the run. Kind of like how Patterson does at TCU with his Safeties and LB's. It might be just as good, if not better than seeing him at a set safety spot.

I feel there is a vast difference in the level of athlete that TCU does that with compared to what DC has tried to do at UW. I don't care what anybody says, we were vastly undersized on defense last year. Ghaali did a decent job at OLB, but go back and watch some film of him on running plays. He was overmatched. I salivate just thinking about what he would have done flying in from a safety spot with WR's trying to block him. He would be a killer at the strong safety spot. Keith Lewis was another good example. Offensive tackles and guards just destroyed that guy time and time again on run plays. It was clear that both Ghaali and Keith were not natural LB's, regardless of the fact that they had gotten their weight up to around 220-225.

I fear the staff has already made a similar mistake in moving Eddie Yarbrough to DE. In my opinion, he has the skills to be an all-conference LB as a true freshman. He is that good.

I pretty much agree with you, but I'm wondering if it isn't English and not DC making these moves - maybe it's a joint decision.

I don't know this for sure, but I get the feeling that DC is the driving force behind most of the position changes. I know that DC is all about increasing team speed, and I think that's the reasoning for most of the position changes we have seen on defense. Speed on defense is great, especially with the recent shift of so many offenses to the spread, but I think DC is going about it the wrong way. Speed is something that you address through your recruiting, not by making safeties undersized linebackers and linebackers undersized defensive linemen.

I guess my biggest fear is that we are taking some potentially great football players and making them into mediocre football players by putting them into a position that their skill set doesn't match in the name of getting a faster defense. I'm not convinced that these position changes are really a benefit to the defense overall.
