1-0 Wyoming at 0-1 Indiana State

MWC vs MWV Challenge
Indiana State lost their first game of the season to IUPUI (Inidana University Purdue University Indianapolis) 72-70
Will be the Pokes first road game, ISU's 2nd home game, and the Pokes first D1 opponent.

Indiana State is probably not going to be a great team this season but this game could say a lot about how good or not good Wyoming might be this year.

Time for those young players to grow up real fast. MVC opponent should be a real test for the team.

Beating ISU won't make us favorites for the MWC but losing to them will almost cement us towards the bottom half of the MWC this year.

5pm Mountain Time tip.

GO POKES!

Looking forward to it! The guy that I'm still waiting to see take the next step is Herndon. Been pretty much invisible the first couple games, so hoping to see a little more from him tomorrow! But if we win I could care less :P Go pokes!

If we lose this game then you can pretty much count us toward the bottom 3rd of the MWC this year.

If we want to be middle of the conference no way we can lose this game.

IUPUI finished last in their conference last year and was projected to finish last this year and they went into Indiana St. and won so if Wyoming can't do the same then can pretty much tell what type of year we will have.

Hope we win.

My thoughts as well. I didn't realize IUPUI was projected to be that bad.

No way we will be a good team if we lose this game.

I don't think this game will define us one way or the other. We'll have good games and bad, for no particular reason other than youth. We need to learn to play well consistently, and that will take some time.

Tend to agree. I think we already know we aren't going to be a contender in the MWC this year, but with a team this young, I don't think we can make definitive statements whether or not we will be a mid-pack or bottom third team based on the results of a mid-November road game.

Indiana State is a very experienced team (55th out of 350+ teams in experience per KenPom), playing at home and feeling somewhat desperate after laying an egg in their debut. This is a challenging game and I would be surprised and very pleased if the Pokes won.

One thing is clear from watching some games over the weekend, and that's that the refs are really focusing on the new emphasis to reduce hand checking and contact. We have to be the aggressor. We should only take perimeter shots that are generated off of penetration.

I agree this game won't define our season with a younger squad we should get better.

After doing some more digging I don't think that IUPUI squad will be as bad as projected. So not surprised they won now after looking at it. They have a brutal schedule so their record might not look great in non -conference but they had two transfer big's from Loyola Chicago who is in the MVC and both guys had played against Indiana St. before 3 times. They also had a guard transfer from E. Michigan who had played against Syracuse, Kentucky and Duke while there besides just playing a whole season at this level. So they had some experience for their game against Indiana St.

They took a 10 point lead in the first half with a minute to go then went on a 6 minute scoring drought and Indiana St. used a 14-0 run to take the lead back but IUPUI was still able to come back and grab another 6 point lead before making some free throws down the stretch to hang on.

Looks like Indiana St. has a couple of big guys down low with one that doesn't do a whole lot but give them size . Their other big Khristian Smith had 19 points and 10 boards and could give us problems if our big guys don't come to play. The other player that is good is guard Devonte Brown but I am not as worried about him with Adams guarding him or as many perimeter players as we have.

Main thing will be how we do down low against their big's and playing composed in the first road game for this team with so many new guys.

I think Wyoming is more talented from top to bottom but if we lose it will be because of our youth.

Don't think this game will be easy since they did lose their first one and don't want to drop two in a row at home but with that said I hope we get the win and I am expecting a win.

Important stats from that first game for Indiana State.

3 pt: 4-18
FT: 20-35
13 offensive rebounds
6 assists to 13 turnovers
9 steals
56 points from 3 players
14 points from the rest

Their big man, listed 6-7 275, fouled out in 12 minutes.

You're on glue if you think this game is going to be predictive of our MWC placement. This is the very first road game for a talented but young team. It's entirely possible to lose this game and still place in the top half of the conference. We've taken worse losses in successful seasons.

Bingo. We're playing a road game against a team that's experienced and supposed to be decent. That team just lost a head scratcher at home, and will certainly be focused. I think we can win, but I hardly expect us to. I don't know what to expect yet. This is our first real game.

I'm just excited to get to see the Pokes play for the first time this year. It would be awesome to come out of this one with a win because if we do we should rattle off some more over the next few. I'm hoping we can build and win at the same time with the new guys. I've really got to tamper down my expectations with this team even still. I feel like we should we these style of games but we just might not be there yet. Hoping Adams can will us to victory in some games that we're still figuring shit out in.

We shoot 45% from 3 and 55% from the field and were going to beat a lot of teams. Especially when our defense jells.

This game is a toss up for me. We most definitely have the talent to blow this open in a hurry but it is going to depend on which UW shows up. If its the UW that showed up against Fort Lewis and can't hit water from a boat while playing god awful, porous defense we'll lose. If the team that showed up against Bristol shows up and hits their shots and, for the most part, played solid D, we'll be alright. I can't wait.

Pretty much if we hit our threes we'll win. If we don't we'll lose. I didn't see much of an inside presence the first two games at all. Justin James was about the strongest presence inside for us now that I think about it.

Agree with this

This is not what I wanted to hear but hey I'm a Pokes fan so I know reality is a bitch sometimes.

It's more of a compliment to JJ. He's a damn good rebounder and could be a damn good shot blocker, too. He was everywhere vs Bristol.

Yeah the new dudes are gonna have to learn a lot. It takes experience to learn how to close out close games and especially close games on the road. It's also a massive learning process to get into our system, play selfless, play Shyatt D, understand your role/play within yourself, and so on. The biggest key to this season will be if the Pokes can somehow manage to pull out wins while all of this is occurring. Just from the sounds I'm hearing on this board I might have to drop us out of the 2nd tier MWC teams and think of us more in the 3rd tier hoping to move up.

Alright game on!
