I thought it would be interesting to go back and read Gagliardi's columns at the conclusion of 2016 Fall Camp with focus on comments concerning the defensive side of the ball. I agree with those on the board who claimed that there was a lack of assignment-sound defensive play at times, especially on the road. That's on the defensive coaching staff. But, as Bohl mentions in the article below, this program certainly is a "work in progress."

“We like this team. We’re still a work in progress, but progress was made,” Bohl said. “Attention to detail in camp was good. We were more focused and more bought in. We have more athleticism.
It’s appropriate that a youngster like Epps was voted a team captain on defense. Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Steve Stanard chuckled when he said UW has only four seniors on its defensive two-deep roster.
When that depth chart is released early next week, expect 17 of the 22 defensive players to be freshmen (true or redshirt), sophomores and/or first-year players.
UW’s defense is still young. That’s not making excuses. It’s just stating facts.

Will we see improvements from Stanard's squad in 2017? (With Appleby gone, all four D-line starters are RFr or Sophs right now.)
