While it is an interesting read, I’d hardly call this the rest of the story. It is pure speculation and bias from my point of view. And denying what Eaton was purported to have said by virtually every member of the Black 14 simply because the author didn’t believe Eaton was racist is a step way too far.

The author (Hunkins) was very connected concerning both his father in law and law partner were on the BOT at the time of Black 14. The author IMO white washes Eaton’s conduct and I suppose tries to explain that Eaton would have changed his mind if a settlement conference would have happened (he already kicked them off the team, speculating that he might later change his mind is silly). But accusing the Black 14’s lawyer of ethical violations based on mere speculation and the fact the same lawyer was disciplined 40 years later in Michigan on something totally unconnected is a step way too far and shows extreme bias against the Black 14’s lawyer IMO.

Overall - great to read his opinion. But it doesn’t change my mind one iota on the wrongful conduct of Eaton and the university. If anything, it reinforces it.

This piece is wholly unnecessary. We are in the healing stage - still - and casting about for new spin on an old, and ugly time in our history is not helpful. This is especially true when there is nothing new about the author's offerings - other than hearsay and some fresh whitewash. Eaton was wrong. The university was wrong. The people in the state and leading it at the time were plagued by the prejudice of the time.
