How did Sam, Mike, and Will became football positions?

So how did the LB position earn these names?

Sam = strongside linebacker
Mike = middle linebacker
Will = weakside linebacker

1 syllable words are easier to say than their full counterparts. They started being used when coaches started shifting their outside linebackers to be specific to the strong and weak sides of the offensive formations.

I think someone should have explained what these meant to DC. I don't mean the Sam, Mike, and Will terms, I mean the "linebacker" term.

I thought he needed to learn what "defense" meant. We had, on record, our worst season in defense EVER this last season.
