First game impressions

REALLY glad that I made the trip up for the home opener! The halfway done facelift of the AA really helps out the in-game experience, and the product on the court speaks for itself.

Grabau - UNC shut him down from the arc, but he did a good job of dishing it off to other players to score and a nice job of driving to the hoop when the opportunity presented itself.

Adams - He's got the look of a first team all conference player this year. If he can consistently hit the three like he did today he's going to be every team's nightmare. If they have to worry about playing out on him so he doesn't hit the three he's going to blow by his defender for a highlight reel dunk. He's also got a really good eye for dishing it to the post players to score. I have a feeling that when he and Nance are on the floor together this team will be pretty unstoppable offensively.

Hankerson - I was REALLY impressed with Hankerson's play. He's a capable ball handler (he's not going to run the point anytime soon, but he's serviceable). Other than the turnover on the first possession of the game he had really solid ball security. He's not going to lose his starting spot anytime soon.

Cooke - He obviously worked his ass off this offseason. He's still the most active post defender we have, and he did really well on boxing out. His offensive game looked much more polished than in recent years. He still needs to work on free throws, but the rest of his game looks way more refined.

Nance - Started off a little cautious, but about halfway through the first half you could see him getting his groove back. He did look a half-step slow this game, but I'm sure he'll be back to normal in no time. The team clearly revolves around him, but he's unselfish and will get rid of the ball if the look he want's isn't there.

Herndon - Looked good to me. He's got really good ball skills for a big man. The dude is a toothpick that got pushed around in the post a little bit, but he's going to be able to provide quality minutes to relieve Cooke and Nance.

Sellers - Sellers is Sellers. He's the biggest post player we have and does a good job of shutting down the lane. He's never going to be much of an offensive threat, but he'll be able to spell Nance and Cooke for a few minutes here and there.

Lieberman - This kid has got some serious handles! He's going to be a nice little point guard for us. I didn't see much from him shooting wise, but he was smart with the ball and quick on defense. We'll see more of him as the season goes along.

Bentz - He didn't see much time this game, but I have a feeling he'll be seeing more this season. Shyatt said after the game that he needs to get Bentz and Lieberman in there more often so that Grabau gets some rest.

McManamen - Played really solid defense against UNC's best shooter and has a nice looking shot from range. He's going to see a lot of time and will bring a legitimate deep threat with him every time he steps on the floor.

Overall I came away very impressed. This is going to be a REALLY good basketball team. I was especially impressed with our defensive rotation the 2nd half. It was also a pleasant surprise to see them push the ball up the floor for the quick score. It doesn't appear that holding on to the ball until the shot clock runs out is going to be our primary offense this season. I know that UNC isn't going to be the hardest team we play all season, but they aren't bad. Take away #2 (who is possibly the best three point shooter I've ever seen) and they aren't even in this game. It's going to be an exciting season!

All excellent points! I love having a 9-10 man rotation, I think with added depth at guard, grabau won't drop off down the stretch this season (it's hard to shoot when your legs are dead). One thing that SLIGHTLY concerns me is we don't a have a true 6th man difference maker coming off the bench... yet. We currently have a bench that can give guys a breather but I didn't see anyone last night that could be a total game changer off the bench like hankerson was for us last season.

I think the coaching staff can help our bench develop into players with bigger roles and potential to have a greater impact on the game, but I don't think they are there just yet.

One other thing about Nance - is there a classier kid in the entire NCAA than him? After he took the tumble on that hard foul, he made a point, before he shot free throws, to go all the way to the other end of the court to the end of the UNC bench to shake the hand of the kid that fouled him. Beyond that, his post-game interview with Dave and Kevin was great - he is humble, thankful and a great role model for his teammates and for young Poke fans like my two boys. My 7 year old is already a Nance groupie and the 4 year old talks incessantly about "that number 22."

Shy has brought high motor and high character kids into this program and I am very proud to be a fan of this outfit - and not only because they are going to be a hell of a team on the court.

Good write-up.

Al Herndon is going to make me borrow some crow from Junky's DC thread. I wasn't really high on Herndon when we signed him as I was concerned he would be too much of a tweener (not strong enough to handle the paint, or quick enough to work on the perimeter). Plus, at the time of his signing I really felt we needed to bring in front court help that could play right away in 13-14 and I didn't want to see another project.

Obviously I still wish we had brought in someone that could have had an impact last year in the frontcourt as we were stuck playing Granberry at the 4 for long stretches and were completely screwed when Larry got hurt. However, it should have been Keonta Vernon I was complaining about instead of Herndon.

He is obviously still a tweener, but he is so much more fluid now than he was 2 years ago. He has also grown quite a bit. I think he might have been under 6'8" and about 175 lbs when he signed. Now, he looks to be a legit 6'10" (well, as legit as any basketball measurement anyway) and on his way to 220 or so over the next year I would guess. Not sure of the impact he will truly have this year as he is still getting stronger and getting the feel of the game, but he just oozes potential right now. I can't wait to see the type of impact he will have as a jr/sr.

only heard bits and pieces over the radio, as was elk hunting again, but it sounded like things are going well, I don't think it's too much too soon it was a confidence builder for LN jr and the team as a whole , LN jr will get less minutes tonight as he needs to be stellar on Saturday. Things are looking awesome from what I'm hearing tho....GO POKES

Al handles the ball really well for such a big young kid. He looks to have a great shot even though he missed his 3. they call him baby Durant I think

Agreed. He had one of the more impressive "first career basket" that you will ever see for a big man, catching the ball behind the arc in the corner and quickly taking it baseline. Took him one dribble to get from the arc to the rim and finished an "and one" with authority.
