I mean this with all respect, and not Talledega Nights-wise, but do you think this did not have an impact on the play calling after this?
If there's about 5 minutes left in the game or up a lot more than 7-14 points, pounding the ball would not be a problem. Part way through the 3rd quarter only up 3 scores? Nearly pissed it all awayNebraskaCowboy said:I had no problem with the play calling. Everyone knew what was coming. They were going to methodically run the ball and try and impose their will to win that game. This would allow them to kill the clock, control the game, and put Nevada's back against the wall. And for the most part, it worked and I didn't have too much of a problem with it. If we had a field goal kicker this wouldn't even be a conversation because any points would have been enough to ice it. We won in the end so not too worried.

But we've had FG issues all season. You always have to take that into consideration. And just "run run run" will not get you by every team you come across. It barely worked against Nevada. Against a team that actually has a defense? Well, let's just say I don't BSU or USU getting pushed around like that.NebraskaCowboy said:fromolwyoming said:If there's about 5 minutes left in the game or up a lot more than 7-14 points, pounding the ball would not be a problem. We had 6 second half possessions. The opening one was a touchdown, the last one iced the game. We had two three and outs following the touchdown but were up 28-14. We then had a 13 play, 57 yard drive that took up 7:03 off the clock resulting in a missed field goal. Hit that field and nothing else needs to be said. I know our field goal kicking hasn't been great but I don't have to much of a problem with that. If you hit the field goal there it becomes a 3 possession football game in the 4th quarter.

I see why he did it too. But Nevada ran a hurry up attack that our defense couldn't even get their hands off their hips and get set before they snapped the ball. TOP is worthless if the other team keeps scoring in short order.McPeachy said:WYCowboy said:I think there are times to go conservative, but not go super conservative in the middle of the 3rd qtr. Agree. But I see why he did. It is the Joe Glenn mentality - limit the possessions (and amount of time of possession) the other team has (when you have a 3 score + lead), and you are likely to win (odds favor it). Sure would be nice to not do though.

I was shocked to see it too. Their entire defensive scheme is to play it safe. I'm glad it happened, and I wish it would happen more often.McPeachy said:HR_Poke said:I see why he did it too. As it clearly was for us, the last 25 or so minutes of the game (TOP being worthless).
Shocked that Stannard dialed up a blitz on 4th and 5 - great call in my opinion, and one I thought he would probably never make. Vigen was the goat if there was a coaching goat last Saturday...
