Finding their Role

I don't think this is a development season. Sure, young and a lot of inexperience. But this isn't a build for the future season- it can't be: josh Adams is a senior and there's way to much talent not to compete in the Mountain West.

The key to this team is finding their Roles. Last years team, heck almost any recent Wyoming team went into those seasons with a lot of understanding of each players role. This team is different and unique in that there might not be a single player on the team comfortable in their role and there might not even be more than a player or 2 that even understands their role. The only curse to the blessing of depth sometimes is this confusion and inner battle to get into these roles.

I think all the way from Adams to noughton, and even Larry Shyatt has some serious adjusting to do to find their role, but when they do the sky's the limit. And the sky for this team is winning the MW tourney again. This team could be that good.

Adams- he knows he's the #1 guy. But what does he think that means and what will he have to do?

Herndon- not knowing the kid I don't want to assume what or how he thinks but you assume he comes into the season thinking he'd be the second option type. With how he's started out I can only guess maybe his head isn't in it. He sure hasn't done enough where just showing up would be enough- I sure hope entitlement isn't playing a part here. I believe in his talent and am hoping he's the type of person to turn his season pretty far from here to there.

mCM- does he have a primary option mentality? Is he a spot minute guy or does he have in in him to take the next step if he wants to be a starter type. Obviously he's never be a primary creator, but he could be that 3 and D solid MWC starter type or maybe he is a bench mob hustler. Time will tell

James/noughton and even Barnes and gorski- of course they'll go through bumps from inexperience but the talent is there to be good starters in this league. (Much higher ceiling for James). But do they know what it will take, and have they or will they do it? What needs to happen for each?

Lieberman and Washington both gotta know that their role could fall anywhere from starter to 3rd string afterthought in this program. That can't be comfortable? But how will those guys respond?

Dalton has the 3 years in front of him advantage over Morris Marshall but both still scrambling as new guys to find a spot. Both will have to and are having to fight for time pretty hard without the benefit of Shyatt's loyalty for first chances. I personally think Marshall will play a huge role if this team reaches its ceiling. But will either or both preserver though the battle for a role?

To me this season all comes down to a microscope on Larry Shyatt. (And Adams). Shyatt has proved he can coach undermanned teams to success. And it really looks like he's proven he brings in quality people. But now he has to find a way to sort out a what looks like the deepest team talent wise at wyo for a long while. Can he find a way to get the guys that need it out there and get their time? Will this team stick together as people in this serious of a battle for time? Did Shyatt really get that great of kids. Somebody or multiple somebody's from most teams would go sour in a situation like this years team.

i think the key will be Adams at the point guard that could be the key. I think it's James, Marshall, and gorski that need to be on the floor more than the rest of the 1-3 guys. The only ways to get those mins is to shift Adams and take a lot of them from Washington/Lieberman

I hope they keep James away from playing 4. (except for maybe early season or until/if Herndon pull his head out

Agree with your post. Nice insight on hoping they stick together as well. The tools are at least around to be plugged into a team that can compete.

Another thing, stop jacking up so many 3s. On occasion is fine, but when most aren't even trying to get past the 3 point line, something needs to be adjusted.

Agreed with everything that's been mentioned. So far everything has been pretty much as expected for me from this team, with the exceptions of Herndon being non-existent so far and Marshall playing a lot less than I expected he would.

i'm thinking it'll be a win one at home lose one on the road, sorry, these kids aren't ready to be road warriors and last night kinda showed that, too bad but true, so probably a 500 season IMO, sure hope they mature during conference and prove me wrong

This is probably spot on too. Winning on the road in college hoops takes a lot of seasoning, flat out talent, or extreme organization. We showed none of the above last night. We'll get our seasoning as this season progresses and Shyatt can help pound organization. Just too early to tell still but I'm really hoping we can gel. We have enough raw talent on this team but they have to find their groove.

While you could be right, it was ONE game and their first true game on the road. Its hard to forecast an entire seasons worth of road games off the first one. Again, were going to be a team who can win any and every game if we hit our percentages. We hit 45% from three last night and 55% from the field and we win that game. We will be a streaky team this year. I think we will win some games we shouldn't and lose some we shouldnt. I'm inclined to think last night was a loss that maybe shouldn't. That team was not that good.

I don't think you can use last night as a barometer for the season either. It was some of these guys first road game and this team is definitely trying to find its identity. Shyatt will get them there, but there's gonna be some bumps, probably big ones, along the way.

^ I also wouldn't freak out over the first game. Unfortunately there's no substitute for experience and we have to take some licks to get some. My expectations for this season are .500 while knowing we could do better depending on how well and how quickly Shy can get these guys to gel. I think James ends up being our 2nd leading scorer by the end of the year.

Coming into the season I really though Aka Gorski was going to be our number two but after the first couple games I agree with you. James is going to be a beast. I think Marshall will score a ton too once he kisses the ring and gets the blessing from Shyatt
