Exhibition Game Player Evaluations

Obviously it was just an Exhibition, but curious how the board saw the individual performances. My take:

Starters:

Nance - I don't want to over-react considering the level of competition, but he was simply on another level than other players on the floor. Seems quicker off the floor when attacking the glass and really got up there and snatched the rebound at a high point. Will be a force on the glass. Also really displayed a developing offensive post game. Uses a variety of moves and shots that you don't see all that often at this level. Clearly worked hard on his game in the offseason.

Cooke - I felt he was passive on offense. Doesn't look comfortable catching the ball and didn't seem to have any intention of trying to score. Obviously does quality work on the glass and can be a big time finisher at the rim. Hit his FT's. I don't expect him to start hitting 90%, but if he hits at least 50% that will represent some serious growth at the line.

Sobey - Very aggressive attacking the rim. I think he will be a key part of the Pokes offense this year. Got burned on D a couple of times and didn't hit his perimeter shots, but overall I thought he played well.

Adams - I thought Adams pretty much picked off where he left off last year. He was handed the toughest assignment (Derrick White, a D1 player IMO) and did well. White didn't go off until he was checked by others. Adams can create separation and release his jump shot a high point which allows him to get it off any time. Still didn't convert a high percentage though although he did hit a couple of three's which was encouraging.

Grabau - His shot looks improved, although still has kind of a slow release which could be a problem on close-outs from big athletic defenders. Biggest issue for Riley is on defense. I think the new rules hurt him as he has to use his hands to help compensate for lack of lateral quickness. Only got called once, but it was pretty much a textbook version of what they have said will be the emphasis this year when he was caught on a handcheck out near the top of the key.

Bench:

Granberry - His shot looks good, but he seemed hesitant to shoot. Seemed to struggle to get into the flow and got lost on D a couple of times. I think he will come along and help this team, but didn't have the immediate impact that I expected.

Washington - At halftime I was getting ready to post that I had found a new hero and his name was TW3. Defensive issues in the 2nd half have tempered my enthusiasm, but you can see why he has been getting rave reviews. Quick with the ball and a solid handle and best of all he can shoot. Confident from the FT line and the arc. He hit a couple of 3's that might have been a little lucky but clearly can convert at a decent percentage from out there. Really the only issue is learning how to play D at this level. He has the ability, just needs the experience. I suppose size is an issue, but since I have been conditioned to watching Luster and Gilmore, I didn't view it as much of an issue last night. Will be a big part of this program over the next 4 years.

Haldorson - They say he gained weight, but he still looks frail out there to me. Smooth offensive game (really liked a couple of drives to the basket), but has a tough time maintaining position on the glass and on defense. I think he can fill the role of a guy that come in off the bench and get you a couple of baskets when you are struggling offensively.

Vernon - The anti-Haldorson. Haldorson is smooth, but lacks power. Vernon is all power. Probably won't see a ton of time this year but has the strength and mentality to survive as an undersized frontcourt player in the MWC. I think he has a bright future, just not ready yet.

Herndon - Not ready yet. I think Herndon simply needs time to physically mature. Unlike Haldorson, I think Herndon has the frame to be a pretty stout player. Just hasn't reached that point in development yet. All arms and legs. Looks bigger than his listed height and has very long arms. I don't see much playing time for him this year. Twice he got switched onto Derrick White and both times it took White about a 1/2 second before he took it to the rim, finishing with contact both times (missed the FT once, otherwise would have been two 3-point plays).

Bentz - I am not as high on Bentz as others. Obviously I am on the wrong side of the debate since Shyatt likes him and I am pretty sure Shyatt forgot more about basketball in his sleep last night than I will ever know. Still, from my perspective, I don't ask much from my undersized walk-ons, but hitting free throws should be part of the gig, no?

Sellers - Not sure whether I should criticize Sellers for this or the other players on the floor, but there was no real effort to get him the ball on the block. Sellers struggles at most aspects of the game at this level, but the one thing he can do is score on the block, particularly against this level of competition. I thought they should have fed him in the post when things started getting dicey in the 2nd half, instead he was out on the perimeter performing dribble hand-offs.

McManamen/Hankerson - Strange.

Stull/Tyser - Practice players, I suppose.

I would agree, great write up and I really enjoy your takes on things. A couple things that I would add is that I actually think Bentz is a good bench player for us. He is pretty solid defensively out there, and takes care of the basketball at all times, he can give you good minutes off the bench to rotate in with some of the guards. I actually think Sellers looked much better than he did last year, he appears quicker than he was last year and looked decent at getting some boards. I think that Sellers can actually play around 8-10 min a game off the bench and actually get us some rest in the front court. I think the main problem there is that we had him on the perimeter instead of leaving him on the block like he should be. I am very surprised both McManaman and Hankerson didn't play at all, anyone know why?

Good write up NowherePoke. Ever since you had that huge preseason write up a few years back on all of the MWC teams I've known you know your basketball and I always enjoy seeing your take on the basketball team.

I pretty much agree with everything you wrote. Nance should be a beast this year and Sobey really impressed me with how much he has improved. I think TW3 is going to be a huge addition with more experience, even later on this season.

The thing that has me concerned or scratching my head is the last thing you wrote. That Hankerson not getting any playing time is weird. I saw a quote in Vorels column saying something to the effect that Hankerson would be available to play the opener next week but that doesn't mean he will play. Makes me wonder if Hankerson regressed so much that he isn't getting playing time which would not make any sense to me. I hope that isn't the case but has me wondering what the heck is up.

Shyatt said that it was his decision not to play Hankerson and Jason, he said they are ready to go for Friday night. I am also interested to seeing these guys and to see if they are in the rotation once we get the real season under way.

That is the part that concerns me. What is the reasoning that Shyatt decided not to play them? Because they regressed and aren't up to par (which wouldn't make much sense to me) or did they get in some type of trouble and he just doesn't want to air it out since we have had multiple incidents on the basketball team the last couple of years? We may never know unless they both don't play again next week which would damper some of my enthusiasm as I had thought Hankerson might be a decent pick up.

from what was tweeted during the scrimmage, this is my take on the guys that didn't play. ITS MY OPINION... im just reading between the lines here;

what I felt from the scrimmage a week and a half ago... is that shyatt was pissed because some players were forcing themselves. meaning a couple of things.

1. whenever they get the ball, they try to force a shot, not involving the weave and waiting for the open shot
2. if not option number one... then it would have to be some other aspect of selfishness that didn't involve proper team play.
3. the scrimmage in Utah took place after the first scrimmage. some other bad performance might have taken place?

bottom line is that shyatt is using this valuable time before season to teach a lesson. He is all about players learning to play as a team and within their abilities... some of the guys that sat out yesterday had to have been getting a lesson from coach.

again, just my opinion.

This could very well be the case, and I would not be surprised if it was. I do think that we will see Hankerson in the rotation at least, and possibly Jason as well. Just my opinion and from what I saw last night I think it will be the same starting 5 with Granberry and TW3 being the first two off the bench. Bentz will play some minutes as well as Hankerson, and possibly McManaman. I also think Haldorson and Sellers see some minutes, but in Sellers case probably more of the 5 minute per game variety. I don't think that Herndon or Vernon will play that much this year as they both are a little too raw from what I saw out of them.

I think Sellers is going to be the most randomly used player. In games against smaller bigs, I think Sellers will be in there grabbing rebounds all night.
Against more athletic, bigger bigs, he will be on the bench.
He might have some games where he puts up 4 points and 11 rebounds.
Followed by a 5 game stretch where he totals 4 points and 11 in all 5 games combined.

Good write up here, agree with pretty much all of it.
Myself, I'm not high on Bentz for the same reasons you mentioned. Late in the game when UCCS was pressing,i was saying the ball needs to be TW3 hands because he can make ft. Bentz seem to play better when there is better players around him (Nance, Adams, Sobey etc.) He was trying to do to much when he and the 3 fr were on the floor together imo.

They didnt play in the scrimmage in SLC either.

Thanks for the info. A couple questions...

Does it look like Vernon has the athleticism to guard some of the bigger guards in the league?

Can Granberry guard anyone or is he another Ogirri that we just try to find shots for and accept as is on defense?

I thought it looked like Vernon had the athleticism, Cup, but might be too physical to do it much. To me Granberry could guatd, not a Josh Adams (obviously) but he does look like he will play d

Yeah, Vernon is a bit too physical, which you normally don't see, but is definitly athletic. Given a year or so to temper it a bit and add more finesse to his game, he'll be a great addition.

Not sure about Vernon. Shyatt played him at the 4/5 against UCCS and I don't specifically remember instances of him getting switched on to some of their quicker perimeter players (White, etc.). I am sure it happened, I just don't really remember.

Just my initial impression, but I think he is better suited guarding bigger players. Lacks height, but is plenty strong enough to hold his position and the big guys won't out-quick him at all. I might be selling him short though.

Basically I think he will play in the frontcourt for the Pokes, but I think he can have a positive impact at this level down the road.

Granberry can guard, but didn't look quite comfortable with the team defense in terms of communication, assignments, etc. Couple of missed communications that involved him and ended up with wide open 3's for UCCS (can't say for sure that he was at fault though). I think that is just a matter of getting comfortable with the system. One thing you will notice about Granberry is his size. With his choice of hair style (shiny) and physique, he almost looks like Leonard Washington out there. I am kind of joking, but Jerron is much bigger than what we have seen from our perimeter players the last couple of years. Obviously Hankerson adds that dimension as well.

I thought someone mentioned that Shyatt did not play Washington last year during the exhibition game because others needed more work / wanted to evaluate other rotations and there was no question Washington was ready to go? Suppose that would be too much to hope for in this case?

I remember Shyatt not playing Washington in the exhibition game last year. Shyatt had the insight (and experience) to know Washington would get tired before the season ended, plus he wanted to get some PT for his new players. Shyatt has more knowledge about how to handle college basketball players (I'm not talking about Martinez type problems) than we have seen at UW in a long, long time. I don't question his decisions much at all.

Thanks for the info everyone. Can't wait for the season to get rolling.

It was always my guess that the Hankerson DNP was just to get the other guys some minutes. From everything I hear he will be a key piece of the puzzle this season.
