Excuses, excuses, excuses

I hear about how great our incoming class is and all, but it looks like Utah State, Boise State, SDSU and others are already there and looking to get better. How is it that crap teams, or supposed crap teams, turn it around in less than a year and it takes us a full rotation of new players...and that doesn't even work? I hear about mono and bar fights and ACL injuries...but what that really speaks to is depth and a dire lack of it, which won't get better for what, three more years now that we will be back to the excuse of needing birthdays? I hear about the other team always having their best night ever and how that caused us to lose...nothing about poor defense or lack of perimeter players? We heard about facilities as being the boogey man. Now that we have some of the best facilities in the league, it is shifting to the fact that the fans pick on the players and are disloyal. Yet again, the " Laramie is awful to recruit to and get other teams to play here" excuse...nevermind the teams in similar places that do just fine.

You are entitled to your own perspective, but mine is that we lack true leadership, creativity and vision. We snark at CSU and Graham and Boise's blue turf, but who is going in a good direction and who is headed backwards?

You are entitled to your opinion for sure. And yes depth has been an issue. Other than that, do you realize Wyoming was in the top 25 before the bar incident? Top 3 last year before Nance went out with an ACL, and in first place before both he and Herndon came down with mono? That is three straight year where Wyoming has been at the top of the conference before whatever happened to derail the season. So by saying it will be 3 more year is just silly. Shyatt has proven he can put a competitive team on the court year in and year out. And IMO the excuses are legitimate. Wyoming lost their best player three years in a row. Yes Nance is back, but not at 100%, and neither in Herndon.

ps. When healthy we beat CSU twice and Boise. Explain what changed.

How would you lead, what would you create, and what do you envision that Shyatt doesn't?

I get it that we are better when we are healthy...that is logical...but why does losing one player not only cause us to lose, but to get blown out and never get back on track? Why are we always one player from disaster? CSU loses Avila and comes out and wins by a lot. Drmic goes out and, admittedly boise struggles, but they get back on track to jump to the head of the conference. UnLV has lost everyone and beats us by 12.

This is just not true. This is the first season we've had a winning conference record under Shyatt. I don't care that we were undefeated with Martinez. That team was not that good. We played a nothing non conference schedule. Other teams lose players as well. Boise state for example. Doesn't seem to have hurt them much. You take the best player off of csewe or san diego st or Boise state and they wouldn't get the shit kicked out of them at Air Force.
We are a respectable team. But we are not that competitive. We are a middle of the pack type of team. Even with Nance, we have a hell of time scoring points on the road. The fact that we are so dependent on him tells you about the talent level on this team. How many players has UNLV lost? Yet there talent level is far superior to ours.

And please, the fact that Herndon came down with mono is irrelevant. He averages like 1 pt and 1 rebound a game and you would have thought the sky was falling when he went out. The fact is, we will not be competitive next year from what I can see. If trey Washington was any good, they would not have red shirted him. We saw what he could do last year and he shoots the ball as bad as everyone else on this team.

Finally, to those who say Hankerson is in a slump: that implies that he is a good shooter to begin with. He is shooting under 30 percent from the field and under 50 percent from the foul line. We are nearly 30 games into the season. A slump does not last an entire year. He's not a good shooter and I can recall all the posts on this board a few years ago that trumpeted his arrival as a great scoring threat. So excuse my skepticism when I read about the great recruiting class that's about to arrive.

I was directing the comment more to the entire athletic department than Shyatt. In terms of Shyatt, I am not a basketball coach, but it seems that Eustacy, Rice and Morrill have sorted out similar issues...

here's the deal.

shyatt is completely responsible for bringing our team out of the basement. however he is also responsible for three years of meltdown. we can all point the finger of guilt at the moon, but it rests on shyatts shoulders to keep the team acting correctly.

I love our coaches. I really don't want any others. but, we need to stop the curse. its bullshit. players making out with hookers, players kicking ass in a bar, players leaving, players injuries.

its not a hoax. we need depth, we need to build depth, and we need to keep away for social media, injuries, bars, hookers, and players leaving for division 2 playing time.

Fair enough.

So what is the leadership, creativity and vision that is lacking there that would lead to a better basketball team, in your estimation? In other words, what should be done, that's not being done.

I mean, you always think about that, but I'm at a loss. You work on facilities, you hire a good coach, help him recruit, etc., etc. I don't know what we're supposed to be doing that we're not doing.

We may have been ranked in the Top 25, but we were not a top 25 team. That team was very overrated IMO; the loss of Martinez hurt, but it didn't make a Top 25 team a team that couldn't even be .500 in conference play. The last tourney team we had in 2002 would beat any team we've had the last 3 years (including this year's) by 10-15 points minimum.

Having said that, I'm not saying we are a horrible team by any means, but that we are still not back to where we were in 2002-2003 (an NCAA tourney caliber team), but certainly closer than we were 5 years ago.
