I'm sitting here at lunch today, catching up on the NFL draft and Smith's prospects, as work's kept me away for the better part of the last month. I was interested to see that Brett was not drafted, but picked up as a free agent by Tampa Bay. I'm excited for him, and I think I see a pattern developing.
Smith was a relative unknown in high school as I understand it, but worked his butt off, played well, and set a lot of records at his school. Graduates early to enroll in college, where a starter is seemingly already tapped. We all remember ACS, right?
A relative unknown as a college recruit, Smith was passed over by the Pac 12 and Big 10 schools he wanted to play for, and signed with Wyoming. Remember, when Smith signed and got here, ACS was the guy (announced transfer in early January). Smith worked his butt off, played hard, and things began to turn around for a struggling squad. Over the next three years, he proceeds to break most of the Wyoming records, and even with a sometimes struggling team is a standout.
We all know that he surprised us by declaring for the draft, but I don't think anyone really blames him. He comes into Tampa Bay as a relative unknown, with a starter seemingly already tapped (McCown). But we all know that Smith will work his butt off, and I think the coaching staff will have a hard time keeping him off the field. When Smith gets his chance, we all know that he'll make the most of it, and he'll hopefully leave Tampa Bay having broken all of their records as well.
Bottom line, Brett Smith is a good choice for a struggling squad, and I think he'll show his leadership and abilities on the field. I'm excited for him, and I know he'll represent Wyoming well. Good pick Tampa Bay, and good luck Brett Smith.
GO POKES!!
