Edwards talks 16-17 schedule

He said UW’s nonconference schedule for 2016-17 is nearly complete other than one home game.

Some of the home games are against Northern Iowa in the Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge, South Dakota State, Denver and Montana. Road games include California, Montana (a home-and-home was set) and a tourney in Las Vegas where UW will play Southern California and then either DePaul or Missouri State.

“It’s tougher than what we’ve been used to in the past,” Edwards said.

Looking at RPIs from last year:

2015-16: California (16), Houston (85), New Mexico State (113), CSU Bakersfield (123), Marshall (126), Omaha (144), Indiana State (173), Southern (186), Denver (193), Montana State x2 (259)

2016-17: California (16), South Dakota State (31), USC (48), Northern Iowa (73), Montana x2 (147), Denver (193), DePaul (198) OR Missouri State (238)

I'm glad that home-and-home series is now with Montana instead of Montana State. Won't be as big of an RPI killer.

That is a pretty good schedule! I think Northern Iowa was/is much better than their 73. They beat North Carolina in 2015-2016 I think. I don't really know what they have coming back but I think that will be a fun home game to go to. :D
I also like that we are playing Montana for the home and home instead of Montana State. I love that we are playing multiple Pac 12 schools and I really like the regional games against Denver and South Dakota State. All in all I really like the schedule. Now if the Mtn West isn't a dumpster fire like they were this year we should have a good chance at an at large bid. (If we win some of these games and thats a big if.) :thumb: BTW I also like that Coach Edwards is looking JC or graduate transfer for our remaining scholarship.

I noticed he also mentioned that all the players involved, suspended ...have been reenstated. All will return to the team... Good news in that we will not lose anyone this year...

It looks like Edwards won't be able to pad his W/L record with cupcakes in OOC like Shyatt did. It should definitely make for a more interesting season next year. Some of these developmental guys need to make huge strides or it's going to be another long year.

Remember, this is only eight of our nonconference games. It's very likely that the other four games will be of the cupcake variety.

Yep. I suspect there will be 5 more games all at home (we usually play 13 with involvement in an exempt tourney). Probably 2 D2 games, 2 low majors as part of the LV tourney (just like last year) and then one other home buy game.

Still, last year was significantly tougher than any of Shyatt's previous teams (our OOC SOS was 55th in the country by RPI last year, toughest since middle of McClains tenure) so building a similar schedule is not a bad thing. The big wild card is how strong those home low majors are. Last year's group CSUB, Omaha, and Southern were all winning teams. If you replace them with a 4-27 (or whatever) FAMU team like we had a couple of years ago it changes those numbers pretty quick.

A solid OOC schedule helps the initial RPI, but winning in conference games is critical. One winning MWC season in the past 13 years is not exactly program reputation building.

Go 8-5 playing a really tough OOC and then winning 12 conference games is a much more enjoyable way to get to 20 wins than going 13-0 against cupcakes in OOC and being sub .500 in conference games. The final season W-L records might look the same but what Wyoming fan really enjoys getting beat routinely in January, February and March just to say we had a 20 game winning season?

Excited for next season. Schedule looks great! I love getting Montana vs Montana State, that's a nice competitive matchup. Then again we did lose to Montana State last year :(.....If Edwards is looking for a JUCO scoring guard and locks up a good one we should be ready for these tests. Damn we really need something big out of Moemeka this next season with steady improvement from everybody on the roster. If Moemeka can contribute something to the team by conference play I'll start feeling like we could be ok. Be stoked if Dalton put on some muscle. Our big play can't get worse then last season imo.

Moemeka looks to be crazy athletic. He got up there in that video. Very impressive.
Yeh that ridic DUNK and it isn't the only impressive thing. When he runs away in like a half sprint it seems like he can move on the court. If he stays and does high altitude running training while working on his overall game     .........my Brown N Gold shades on gonna be back on before the seasons starts, dreaming of the best.

Speaking of getting up there, I saw this tweet a couple of weeks ago on Austin Conway's twitter and was never able to figure out who it was who is jumping in this video. It kind of looks like Moemeka but I am not sure. Do any of you guys know who this is for sure?

I hope coach Edwards can put consistent OOC schedules together like this. Bringing back the mwc/mvc challenge is a huge help to not have to play FAMU and other schools like that. If we can keep scheduling PAC12 schools, all the better.

Man!
He's got long arms, too. They say he is like Derek Cooke with better basketball skills.
