Depth Chart?

Is it me or does depth seem razor-thin?
It really is, almost everywhere but RB. A few injuries to key starters and this really could be a rough season. It's absolutely crucial that Coffman be as good as we think he'll be.

I'm surprised no Doddles, CJ Johnson, Price or Murphy in the two-deep at WR. There's been a lot of press about those guys. Mulhardt and Gentry must be better than I thought.

The WR crew is not very good this year. With the exception of Maulhart, Gentry and Parker they are all green and have no clue about the offense. The learning curve is too steep for most of them. Too bad Simpson got hurt because he would have helped our depth!

Interesting. That's usually the reason freshman redshirt, but I was hoping Murphy, Johnson, etc. talents would exceed the situation. Oh well.

Nothing new on the injury front?

IMO, this is where we should start to see signs of success. I expect some highs and some lows but competitive in most games. If you look back at teams who built something successful, usually they have a season where they play a bunch of young guys and are competitive. Typically, they slide into a bowl game but are under the radar because they didn't have a great win/loss record.

The following years is when they start to get attention. Hopefully, we start to see competitiveness this year. We might not win them but very few games get completely out of hand. I know it is early in Bohl's tenure and patience is important, but, with this schedule, even our roster should be fairly competitive.

Other than the 1st string DL that is one small defense. Are the rest of them speed guys? I know Bohl had great success with smaller LBs that could do it all and were tougher than hell which made up for their small stature. Probably his best LB was 200lbs and maybe 6' but he was a playmaker that could cover WR but also take down a big RB or set the edge against a TE or OT. We have a very big OL so I'm going to be interested in seeing what happens if they can get their mitts on your LBs.

Here is our depth chart. I know the names mean nothing but it's still fun to size them up. Some things of note: three RBs are injured and not taken into account on this depth chart, I expect the started to be Sr Arrington who is 5'11" 215lb UAB transfer, our starting FB is suspended for this game as is our backup NG which forces a backup DE to slide over, third string is a true fr.

Eventually, we'll get to the point where guys don't have to play right away and can have a few years in the weight lifting program before seeing the field. It's a matter of depth right now.

It looks like I expected. Last year we had holes and gaps in certain positions, this year those holes are patched up but their still fresh. This year we have new holes and gaps that were patched up by a recruiting class. So even though were better in certain areas, we traded those areas for others that fell off after losing quality players from last year. This is why we have seen several players that changed positions and roles this year. Were still trying to patch things up.
Overall I think we are equal to last years team talent level. This year will be similar or down comparably by a game or two. So I look for something along the lines of 3 to 6 wins.
Next year we will have more depth. And still some questions... Who will take the reigns at QB? Will our WRs continue to trend upward? Who takes Wicks spot? DL? And how far has our D backfield progressed?
Based on those questions and what our schedule is like that year we will see where Bohl has this program. At that point it will legitimately be his program and not just a patch work in progress.

I agree....good post. People seem surprised by the depth chart, but it is what we expected for the most part. It isn't horrible and what we lack in size, we make up in speed. DJ May runs a 4.4....that is damn fast for a linebacker.

This is an assumption I look forward to seeing how it plays out. We assume that because these players are light, they must have top-end speed to make up for it. Not always the case.

Thanks for posting that. Interesting...that secondary is kinda funny. Three gigantic starters, and one very much undersized starter.

Hold on a minute! Don't you remember your physics? Kinetic Energy = mass x velocity.
So if your mass is less, you can make up the kinetic energy loss by increasing your velocity.

But I will concede that if your velocity is very low, and your mass is very high, the fact that
you can maintain a decent kinetic energy doesn't help much on the playing field.

This was a pretty good video, like to see them all trying to get better.
