Denver Post: Its always defense first for Wyoming basketball

Defensive strategies and game plans are largely based on the personnel and tendencies of the opponent. In all matchups, Shyatt believes defense is a mind-set, and communication among players is paramount.

"You have to move your feet, your hands, your mouth," Shyatt said. "We always talk about hands, feet, mouth. Good defensive teams might be good at two of them. If you want to be a great defensive team, you have to be good at all three. I want our guys to be loud, and early."

Shyatt believes any good team has an identity. Wyoming certainly has one.

"I wouldn't compare it to military brainwashing," said Nance, the preseason Mountain West player of the year. "But when you come here, after three or four weeks, your ego is gone. Whether you're the 15th-best player on the team or the best, if you don't close out your man defensively, you're going to get yelled out. And you're not going to play. Not at Wyoming."
