Decline on FT %

Honestly the only thing Schroyer did good was, his teams were like top 5 in the NCAA in FT %.
Of course...I was in high school and I might not remember it correctly.

I don't know if it was quite that high, but his first two teams were good FT shooting teams. 08-09 (the year they won 19 games) in particular was a solid FT shooting squad because you had Ewing (83.2% and got to the line alot), Johnson (83.4%, excellent for a big man), Ogirri (86%, didn't get there often though) and Muojeke (73%) as our primary scorers. The rest of the team struggled (Waddell shot less than 50%, Thiam was at 52%, etc.), but those 4 took the bulk of the FT attempts.

Several of Schroyer's teams (and McClain's) took a lot of FT's and there was at least one year where they were top 5 in attempts, which might be what you are thinking of.

I've posted a rant on this subject before, but it's worth repeating.

If you are division 1 scholarship basketball player in an elite conference there is absolutely NO REASON that you should be shooting anything less than 80% from the free throw line. Think about the name of the shot: free throw. It's a FREE SHOT! No one in your face, no worries about coming in too fast, no shot clock. It's a set shot from 15 feet away that is only worth 1 because IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE EASY. If you're shooting less than 80% I have a quick fix: Get your ass in the gym, shoot 100 free throws, then make 20 in a row before you leave. Do this every day and I guarantee that you will increase your percentage to an acceptable level.

I'd say Cooke has some sort of excuse, it being only his second year actually playing basketball, but otherwise I agree.

In his interview, coach Shy said they did that practicing for the game (something like that anyways) and all but one dude was well passed 80%.

80% is a little unreasonable to expect, I think you should expect 65-75% and should strive for 80% but you can't tell me 5 guys on any team that are all D1 and all shoot 80%+ from the charity stripe.

One team in D1 Basketball shoots .813 from the free throw line 1 team out of 347 shoot 80% as a team. UW is tied for 171 @ .690 there are nearly 200 teams that shoot worse percentage from the charity stripe. While I think it would be nice to be in the 75% range and have a team leader that shoots 85% the only reason we are having this conversation is because as a team that plays solid defense and gets to the line a lot it's more noticeable.

So I see it two ways, If we are going to play hard D and get to the line then the entire team needs to get their free throw shooting numbers up. If we scored 70+ a game and didn't go to the line so much no one would notice this decline in FT shooting.

Some food for thought, If we as a team shot 75% from the charity stripe we would be #2 in the nation the gap from #1 to #2 is a huge gap the team shooting .813 is putting up unreal numbers from the charity stripe. They are also 14-1 in conference play and 19-7 overall. I'm not saying we can't shoot 80% it's just not a realistic expectation.

It's no excuse, but I think it indicates our lack of depth. Guys are tired, playing a lot of minutes, and that shows up in the FT shooting down the stretch. Again, that's no excuse, but it's the only thing that makes any sense to me...

I think I heard on the Shyatt radio show -- I think in early January -- that anytime during practice Shyatt will call out two players. Practice then stops and both players have to shoot two FTs. If either one fails to make both, then the whole team has to run sprints. I wonder if he's quit doing that?

I think it's a question of inexperienced players and depth plain and simple right now this team is worn out 2 games a week with the starting 5 averaging 30+ mins no one in the country is doing that at not that I could find anywhere.
