CSU, Utard State, etc.

So with CSU and Utah State showing that you can win with nearly entirely new rosters, I think the pressure has to be on Wicks this next year. I am willing to give him a pass for what Napoleon did to him this past year. Next year, I think we've seen enough instances where teams retool and win right away.

Wicks needs to show he can develop players in order to be successful at Wyoming. Wyoming will never be able to compete financially with other schools in NIL money. Our best bet is to show players who do not get recruited by the P4 that Wyoming can be a place where you can play for a year or 2, enter the portal and get some good money offers from those with deeper pockets. NiL has basically turned teams like Wyoming into the minor league or junior colleges where less heavily recruited high schoolers can play and develop for a year or 2 before transferring.

I think you've been way too optimistic about the future outlook of the team
Time will tell for sure. I'm basing my optimism on the fact that there's not one player that was on the roster this year other than Obi that would have seen the floor on any other decent team in the MW, and we still won double digit games. I credit that to coaching.

Heath Schroyer had double digit wins in each of his 4 seasons. We had 5 conference wins this year and 2 of those were against a 4 win air force team. Frankly, anyone could have had those results. And if were relying on a bunch of incoming high school kids to turn things around next year, expect more of the same.

Now this is a depressing post. True, but really depressing.

I think that the high school recruiting path could be more fertile but comes with the likely outcome that we develop players that we might not have had access to - as other, larger schools simply rely on the portal to build their rosters, as opposed to high school recruits, leaving them available to teams like WYO - only to watch them transfer after our investment to make NIL cash.

When do schools start to demand buy outs from players as a condition to either NIL or a schollie, similar to how coaches are treated? Teams that want to poach might at least have to think twice before meddling and poaching a kid if they have to fund both a buy-out and an NIL deal. Add in a functional salary cap on each school and you might have a fairly logical system. My guess is that the big and mid-tier larger schools are just as tired of having to deal with losing rosters as the rest of us. No one is immune and almost everyone is getting fatigued.

Coaches can schedule non-conference games plus the two wins against Air Force and a couple of home wins against a similar bottom feeder conference program (SJSU or Nevada) and get to 14 wins. Next year CSU, Utah State, Boise, SDSU are all still in the league. UNLV will be much better immediately because they got out of the nepotism of Lon Kruger's son. (UW will sticks with these type of hires and leaves them around for a long time). New Mexico will be good too. Burman will keep cashing his monthly checks for $48000 and we can expect another first round exit at the MWC tournament.

I just saw where St. Francis of Pennsylvania had chosen to move to DIII. They made a realistic choice that will make the University better in the long run.

The administration and the BOT at the University of Wyoming are completely inept and incompetent, because they don't make any decisions and this malaise continues for years now. It's very sad and embarassing if you are associated with it.

Are we that much different that the vast majority of teams that are mid-major? Everyone keeps talking about NIL being the reason we suck but I think that is the case for everyone outside of the P4. The mid-majors are still fun to watch and some of those mid-majors are kicking the holy crap out of us. example: CSU.

The narrative at UW has to change! From the top down. Call it Blind blissful thinking but I am sick of the excuses for everything and I am beyond sick of the narrative that dropping down will help. Please provide one example of dropping down a level actually helping a university. It's like we are hearing what BYU and CSU fans used to say about Wyoming and believing it. Why can our conference mates compete and we can't. Why is everyone that joined the MWC the first time in 99 on an upward trajectory except us. Hell even Utah state is being aggressive and smart with their BBall team. They have past us in every category since TB took over. Logan is not any better than Laramie. I promise that. Cache valley has roughly 130,000 people. Laramie county and albany county together have about 140,000. So there goes that excuse.

I am hearing for the first time in my life the casual UW fan say we should just drop down a level because it is hopeless to compete with the MWC. Our BBall team has literally been thrown away by TB. From the arena upgrade that puts the students in a location where they can't even see the floor to the debacle with season ticket holders to the hiring easy choice coaches to the lack of support. This stems from TB's narrative of UW sports. I was glad that Sundance got the bball job because I think he has the energy to change the narrative. I hope anyway. Sorry for the rant. Its just been on my mind lately. My kids are starting to believe the negativity and it is hard to try to convince them otherwise when at every turn they hear the excuses. I resort to watching the 80's, 90's and early 2000's basketball games. Even at our worst we were still fun to watch back then. If we truly can't compete with the likes of CSU, New Mexico and Utah state then lets drop down a level. If we drop a level then the athletic dept better not ever come and ask for a penny from anyone with money though. No one wants to invest in a sinking ship.

All 16 teams remaining in the tournament are P4. So we know that NIL is killing the mid majors. We were in the tournament just 4 years ago. It's not impossible. And we are in the same NIL boat as everyone else. CU was 26-11 two years ago and just barely lost to get to the round of 16. They lost all of their top 6 players to NIL (one guy went pro) and this year they were 14-20 and 3-17 in the Big 12. NIL is going to affect everyone except the P4 teams with unlimited money. CSU was paying Medved nearly 2 million a year. Is Sundance making even 1/3 of that? We spend 2 million on a 30 second superbowl ad that 1/4 of the country sees, and in the meantime, we have 2 uncompetitive programs because we wont or can't make the financial commitment to be better.
Dropping down a division is financial suicide. I get the feeling listening to Burman that we will do whatever it takes to remain D1. But being competitive seems to be a luxury we can't afford.

It's the state of college sports. We'll be rebuilding each year, and if our coach has a good run, he'll be hired away. Just win conference championships and I'll be happy. I'll never convert to a "Power 4" school. In some ways, it's more fun to not be a fan of one of those schools.
