Maybe "no unnecessary travel" means driving for 8 hours and sitting in weather at the risk of watching a coach choose to punt down by 11 with all 3 timeouts and over 2 minutes to play. DC can't complain about attendance after he gave up in the TCU game. Wyoming fans don't want to travel to watch us give up in an otherwise exciting game where the players gave great effort. Just weeks before Denver was shutout all game but scored 15 in the last 2:44 and got the win in overtime. They did it by trying, instead of punting on 4th down. It only would have taken a couple big plays. A defender slipping in bad weather, a slippery ball on an onside kick. It was not impossible. Enough on that.
I still think DC is a good coach, and think after a few years (especially with Bret Smith) the fans will come around, but we just aren't there yet. If we can stay bowl eligible for a few years in a row and challenge for conference championships, then I think our attendance will rise. With TCU leaving and Kellen Moore graduating I think we could be favored as Conference Champs as soon as next year. We will lose 4 starters on defense and only a couple on offense, but next year we will have Schober LB back, Yarbrough, Puletasi, and Willis at DE, a bunch of WR, DBs, OL coming back....plus everyone else will be a year bigger, faster, stronger and more experienced.
I also think Laramie hosting the state HS football championships actually hurts the attendance the following week. For those that traveled to watch state, they probably don't want to travel down again, for probably the 2nd or 3rd week in a row. Agreed, attendance needs to be better. I hope we travel well to the bowl game, maybe people are saving up time and money for that?!
Yep, I'm with you. Who needs a coach that takes a program and has us primed to go 8-4. If he wants to punt, I can't wait for him to take a hike and get out of here. I mean, who cares if he has improved the athleticism on the team. Show him how upset you are because he punted by punishing the football team and not showing up for a game. Who cares if we now have a team set for its second bowl appearance in three years. Whine about the fact he decided to punt in a game. With the experience you claim to have and knowledge you espouse on football, I would think that sometimes you make decisions that are designed with long-term implications, and making sure you are in better shape for the overall picture.
Surprised you aren't bitching that he didn't bring Smith back in that TCU game, despite knowing that if he was knocked out once more against TCU he would not have been cleared to play against Air Force or New Mexico, but then who cares about those two games. You don't want to look ahead and see where the road is leading, you just want to plow through the damn barricade to show you are stupid but tough.
The bottom line is the people who didn't show up didn't show up because they didn't want to be there, and tha'ts their decision and more power to them. If they need some weak ass excuse like they are pouting because the coach punted against TCU, that shows how feeble they are in their support of the program. To whine about one play and act like it is a sin against life shows me someone looking for an excuse to be a cheap, second-rate fan.
If you didn't want to come because of the weather, fine. If you didn't want to come because you were having a dinner party that night, fine. If you didn't want to come because you had a headache, fine. If if you didn't want to become because you didn't want to come, fine. But you whine about a decision to punt against TCU and try to say that's why you didn't go to the game, that's BS.
