Cowgirls Tennis top the MWC Standings

I'm no Tennis fan but I am a fan of programs succeeding in Laramie regardless what programs they are.

With one match left the Cowgirls are sitting at the top of the MWC Standings. They should be a #1 or #2 seed for the MWC Tournament. Fresno was the 2014 Champion and are currently one game behind the Cowgirls which is being played now.

I thought tennis tournaments were set up more similar to wrestling, where teams don't receive seeds but the players in each division (singles and doubles) receive seeds. Then based on how teams do in different brackets, an overall winner is determined.

Is it really a dual match format to determine who wins? I would think that individual players would have some sort of chance of playing for an individual championship...

According to the website and the bracket it's all seed based and will be broadcast on the MWC Network so who knows might actually watch it and cheer them on.

Cowgirls tied with Fresno 6-0 for the season when they beat CSU 4-0 today. Might not hold that Basketball or Football prestige but Tied for Regular Season Champs and on to the tournament which will be broadcast on MWC might have to watch it.

+1 Our Eastern Europeans were better than everyone else's. Good job, ladies, way to bring one home for Wyoming!

Magdalena Stencel - Poland
Nastya Tokareva - Russia
Jessica Parizher - California
Christa Gecheva - England
Silviya Zhelyazkova - Bulgaria
Alma Espinosa - Panama
Dorottya Jones - Hungary
Cecilia Mercier - Uruguay

Looks like we recruit mostly Europe. Only one kid from the US on the team.

Me too! I don't care where they come from. Just trying to clear up a little confusion on where these kids are from.

A player from Poland and a player from Russia? I just hope politics doesn't come up very often.

I mean... it's cool and all that they are good. And cool that these girls get to go to college at UW, but... it would be cooler if our tennis schollies were baseball scholarships. :twocents:

A. No, baseball players would get killed on the tennis court.

B. Admittedly, this might be less true for baseball players from Eastern Europe.

C. And if you're suggesting we should again try baseball....that's a double no. While the 10" of snow Laramie has on the ground right now would make sliding easy, it would not be much fun watching all grounders stop short of the pitching mound and the players spending half an hour trying to find the ball.

Clearly you meant to type Hockey and not Baseball. Since it's Women and not Men you might have meant Softball.

Two of our most successful programs in the early '80s were dominated by foreign students.

- Skiing- Norway
- Track - Nigeria and Kenya

I think Baseball in Laramie in the spring is fantastic..

(looks at news reports from previous week)...(realizes that college baseball season starts in February)...(changes mind)

Obviously that is TIC, but it is much more cost effective to build a competitive Tennis team at UW than it is baseball. Short of building indoor facilities, we would be a door mat, and to spend that kind of money to support a non-revenue sport is something that only schools with P5 media dollars rolling in can afford to do.

I have to give Burman some credit as many of his recent hires in the Women's sports have really done well. Callihan and Clower have both been great and while I wasn't sold on Cuadrado for a while they had a great run this past year.
