Unlv beat the team that just dumptrucked us...
Are we at the point in the season now where every coach has observed what every other team can do and it now becomes more a battle of coaches than players? I'm not positing that it is totally between the coaches, but that coaches now play a bigger role. This idea is just something that popped into mind. I could be FOS.
I think to a point you are right. I also think that we are at the point of the season where the pretenders go away and the contenders, including late season pushers come alive.
Teams like Fresno that have proven they were bad in OOC play, then "surprised" some teams with their style of play (similar to Wyo, SDSU, NM), are likely going to fall back in the standings.
Boise who got a little surprised at the beginning of MWC play (started 0-3) has now won 5 games. We will find out shortly which streak was the fluke, the 3 game losing streak or the 5 game winning streak?
The teams with the best coaches have an advantage (Fisher, Shyatt, Morrill). And teams with the best players also have another advantage (Nance, Greenwood, Shepherd).
But when it comes down to it, the teams the make the final push to the MWC title are going to be the teams that kick ass in the next 5 or 6 games. We are 8 of 18 in. Give us 3 weeks, where teams are playing eachother for the second time, where coaches figure out ways to exploit and hide weaknesses, and the teams "surprising" other teams fall out of the race.
I think these next 5 or 6 games show that Wyoming, SDSU, and CSU are the class of the MWC. With New Mexico, Utah State, and Boise State being in that second tier.
With that said, the final few games (obviously) will be the ones that give the seperation between Wyo-CSU-SDSU.
It's not who wins, it's who survives. Teams with the best home court advantages, best coaches, and best players will be in contention.
