pac-12 stated boise and sdsu are not canidates... don't want em. I like the pac-12 more for that

there is big talk on the mwc forum about boise, sdsu, and byu coming back along with some others to get our conference to 16 teams. boise and sdsu fans, even some byu fans are talking about possible additions with the right tv money making the mwc viable.

but this is the part that between the lines: the reason all this started is from the tulsa board... stating that the mountain west is about to expand. utep chimed in and said yes, "we think so too"

so this is what im thinking is about to shake down.

next year, we will have 10 members

airforce
colorado state
new mexico
wyoming
unlv
fresno
san jose state
utah state
nevada
hawaii

This is the fun part: if we invite tulsa and utep... and they accept, the mountain finally gets what it needs. 12 teams.

conference championship game=best chance at playoff
conference championship game=ability to renegotiate with cbs.

we don't need sdsu and boise, or byu. It would immediately provide the stability and scheduling required.

we get to shut out boise, sdsu, and byu... whom in about 2 years will be scratching at the door again.

what is kinda funny, is the cbs deal... even though it sucks monitarily... its helping us find members that want regional ties. the money is going to come. once that championship game is in place...

everybody talks about the tv revenue, but once all this settles, its not going to be about the tv dollar that helped the mountain west survive. Its the stability and footprint.

im trying not to get excited, but i actually think this is what the hair has been up too. finding a way to get a championship game.

Billings, I think it was, seems to be in the know. He hinted as much on the MWC board, and several other posters from other MWC schools have hinted as much as well. So, something is up. I'm just not really sure what it is. Though, it's been everything from inviting UTEP (old WAC rival that should not have been left behind) and Tulsa, to adding SMU, Houston, BSU, SDSU, UTEP, and Tulsa. Even some talk that the newcomers of the Least sat in on a vote on whether the Least should disband or not.

So yeah, way too much smoke for nothing, just no idea what it will lead to.

The CBS contract still bothers me.

I like CBS Sports. I prefer it to ESPN and Fox's new thing. We were early through the gate on the contract and I don't think anyone expected the kind of valuation the other conferences negotiated (revenues basically quadrupled).

Questions that bother me:

1) At what point is it in CBS's favor to help us maintain stability by increasing our revenue? I would assume they have an equation worked out which balances their profits to keep the MWC viable and competitive. If we keep bleeding teams off to nBE or other conferences, their product reduces as well. I know we aren't the Big XII for TV sets but, we aren't a joke either and we control a sizable swatch of real estate which should be attractive to regional corporations interested in focused messages in our footprint.

2) When will the contract be re-negotiated? Doesn't seem prudent to wait.

3) What can we expect for coverage of our teams in this new contract? A revamped version of the MTN or, are we going back to two or three games a year per school?

4) Weekday games? I'm not against an occasional one here or there (especially OOC) but, are we going to be relegated to several a season? If so, how many is too many?

5) How much 'sand' do our conference mates have to stick together? I don't get warm and fuzzys from FSU, UNLV, and even CSU.

6) What kind of exit penalties will be recommended? Will there be a longer notification period?

I can only assume the resounding silence from the MWC on re-negotiations is a positive thing. Nobody seems interested in showing their cards any more. It would be nice to see a similar quadrupling of our 'fruit' but, I'm not sure that is realistic?
