It was before that. I went to school there in 02 and 03 when they wanted to make the change and had the students formulate nicknames. They (admin) had a little list of their own and wanted to have a nickname that symbolized the area in which we lived... They were intrigued with the vast heard of Red Desert wild horses that roamed the area.
Hardly anyone but admin voted for it, and they were even 50/50.
I was on the student board that was to go and survey others and come up with your own list. Several of mine made it. I brought up different names and had them listed that I thought symbolized the area rather well: Outlaws; Wild Bunch; Oilers; Boomers; Miners; Desert Elk; Red Desert Bulls (Elk logo); Red Desert Storm; since the jr highs and HS were all feline, and was a bigger cat as you aged, I thought I'd play off that: White Mtn jr HS Panthers, East jr HS Cougars, RSHS Tigers, so why not the WWCC Pride? You know, stuff that the area could identify with... None of the kids wanted Mustangs! Mustangs were everywhere. I think Casper College was, two teams from Utah in our district were, and one or two from Idaho and maybe one from Montana. It was pretty much already decided by admin, before it hit the floor. SUCKED!!! Even people in the community didn't want Mustangs. If I recal it was one of the Elk and Outlaws that won out by a landslide... Yes, their nickname could've been so much better.
