CKLV Day 1 Recap

Today was certainly a day for Cowboy Wrestling. Big-time wins and some weird losses highlighted the day that saw three Cowboys into the Semi-Finals: Luke Willochel, Joey Novak, and Christian Carroll; one in the Consi bracket: Eddie Neitenbach.

Best of Day 1
This belongs to Luke Willochel and Christian Carroll. Luke came out and upset the #15 (Cardinale) and #13 (Spidle) wrestlers on his way to the semis. Branch stated, “The good thing about Luke is nobody knows what he does because he is an instinct wrester.” That probably comes from having an older brother on the team and all those years of competing for the last dinner roll at Thanksgiving. I am sure Gabe is proud of his brother.

Christian Carroll. I must admit after NDI I thought HWT might be too much for him, and he could dominate guys in the 25 ranked range but admittedly didn’t know when he faced bigger guys if he could sustain. He has certainly turned a switch and made me eat my thoughts or as Branch put it, “Making people eat their words right now.” Carroll faced returning All-American, #5 ranked, Taye Ghadiali. You could tell Ghadiali was frustrated being in on shots but giving up takedowns and then he started gassing where Carroll just kept attacking. Carroll would come away with the MD 11-2.

Weirdness of the Day
Wyoming lost three times via pin today where they were the aggressors on solid shots. Sefton was in on Blake West; Blake was able to lift and pin Sefton. Gabe was in on two single legs, and they fell to the mat, and Gabe ended up on his back, and then Eddie was in on a good shot with the takedown and looked like he slipped and was on his back.

My MVP
During the Carroll and Ghadiali match there was some lady on screen yelling at Carroll early in the match. Well Carroll scored the first takedown and some random guy sitting a chair over from her started clapping loud like he had just won the lottery. It made me laugh and you could tell SHE DID NOT like that. Thank you random guy for being a Cowboy even if was only for 7 minutes.

Day 2
Matches start at 11am MT on FloWrestling. I must say the video interview by Bud Denega after the Day that Coach Branch seemed happy with the effort. It was not long ago Wyoming had ZERO wrestlers on day 2, let alone, three in the semifinals.
