Interesting read from the CST.

I read that article too. I guess I don't blame Burman for trying. He was willing to shell out the bucks to try to help the team. Unfortunately I believe it was probably wasted. The team, as Burman pointed out, "didnt leave it all on the court." And not a lot of underclassmen got much out of the experience. The poor attendance was predictable I think with disappointment from the tournament and spring break etc. Attendance would have been better if the Pokes had gotten a 2nd game (and I think that was the real goal). I hope the kids understand that they are being given opportunities, but its up to THEM to make the most of it.

I think you nailed it. My concern though, given the current financial parameters set forth by Buchanan to Burman, and the panic trimming of the athletic budget from top to bottom, I just wonder if the cash could have been wiser spent. Especially given the outcome and overall lack of effort by the men's team! Not that it is much, but the loss of 30K or so, could have done wonders to travel the band to AFA and CSU for both football and basketball next year...or purchased new mats for the track team, or maybe even jump-start-funding of an Alpine D1 team for 2010. Etc.

Hind sight being 20/20, you're correct. Burman probably should have passed on this (at least the first round game and waited to see about a 2nd round when students would be back and maybe enthusism built). I'm sure he's kicking himself now. But he took a risk to try to do something good, and I wont be too hard on for it. But I do hope that the players understand everything you just said. When they step out on the floor , it isnt just about them.

If he didn't take the game, that would send the message that the University didn't support the team. Attendance was horrible, but like many have said...if we won and hosted UTEP in the 2nd round things would be much different.

Adam Waddell played his heart out.
