The quarterbacks

Much to the chagrin of many of their fans, the Bucs didn't draft a quarterback this year. But they didn't ignore the position, either. The Bucs signed Wyoming junior Brett Smith as an undrafted free agent, and there's a good chance he'll survive this camp and go to training camp with the team. The reason is two-fold. Coach Lovie Smith has expressed a desire to take four quarterbacks to camp, and Brett Smith might be a better prospect than some have given him credit for. He has a good arm and a great work ethic — the kind coaches love — and some scouts believe he would have been drafted had he played somewhere other than Wyoming. If he doesn't look out of place in this camp he could earn a pass to training camp.

Meh... I don't see much criticism in this. I think it is reality. I would rather have someone say the way it is than be a sunshine pumper.

I think Smith plays at at BCS school and he gets drafted. I agree with that. Derek Carr, Bortles and such had some love going into the season, and their teams made a splash in the national rankings. That wasn't Smith...nor the Cowboys.
 
The reality is, is that Wyoming football is down. I am not going to sit here and pretend that we are better than we are. Our team is 53-68 over the past ten years. We are cruising along at a 43% winning percentage.

I cant blame Smith for leaving. I wish he would have stayed. I think he would have benefited from Bohl and his system, but I think Brett will work his butt off and make the team.

He didn't want to run for his life in 2014 like he did prior years for us.
 
I have a few thoughts on this...

First, the writer is clueless about Wyoming, as some "easterners" tend to be. Second, if Brett had played for a number of other coaches last year (his junior season) he probably would have been drafted. Last, if Brett had stayed his senior season (dead horse I know) at Wyoming, I think he is a top 100 pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
 
I guess agree with you guys that this in exactly "slap in the face". I just hate when this type of thing is written.

We are pursuing big time recruits which I like. When I see this stuff, I can't help but think these types of statements come back to haunt us in the recruiting game.
 
I'd like to agree that it is an insult...however, I also believe it is 100% accurate. I've thought all season long, if Brett played in a BCS conference he would have been a Top 3 round pick. The simple fact that he played for Wyoming (and to a lesser extent, non-BCS) dropped him 4-5 rounds. I don't think it's right, but I know how the rest of the country views our program...."Wyoming, where's that? They have football?"
 
It's not a slap in the face to anyone, it's a statement of reality. Brett played outside the Big 5, on a team that went to one low-level bowl game and got stomped. Brett played really well for the most part and had some great numbers, but if he'd played anywhere else in the Big 5 and had those same numbers, he probably gets drafted.

Just reality folks. Let's hope Brett makes the team, gets some playing time, and can help to shine some light on Wyoming football.

Kellen Moore went undrafted too....and his teams were ranked in the Top 5 for much of his career. Playing at a non-AQ/non-P5 school is rough altogether....respect is very hard to come by. I still think the program being buried on the Mtn. for so many years really hurt the program's visibility. Here's hoping these ESPN games change that. Whether its ESPNU or whatever, at least people will not be able to say, "WTH is Wyoming" anymore.

Brett landed in a good spot though. TB provides his most realistic chance for success.

I hope Wyoming can find another great QB. Its tougher to do than people acknowledge. Everyone said Hawaii would be fine post-Brennan....the same was said for Nevada post-Kaepernick...Boise post-Moore...replacing great QBs at this level is a bitch. Fresno and Utah State will find that out the hard way in the coming years.....fortunately Wyoming is moving to a system where the QB isn't everything, but still.....God help the next Wyoming QB. You won't realize how spoiled we were until things look uglier than usual.
 
Where did the Alabama QB get drafted? Even if you're a good QB on a national championship team doesn't mean you'll be a high draft pick
 
Its funny how so many of you are so critical of the program, but when someone outside of the program says something negative, its "How could they say such a thing?! What a slap in the face!"

Did anyone say the slap wasn't justified. If I grab a girl in the bar and she slaps me it doesn't mean I didn't deserve it or it wasn't a slap.

It is what it is. Accurate and a slap--neither of which help recruiting.
 
This isn't as much a slap in the face as the writer bring clueless.

How many scouts did he really talk to in prep for this article? My guess: 0.

Scouts didn't knock Alcorn State, Miami (OH), or Delaware when McNair, Roethlisberger, or Flacco were drafted. They don't care about what school you went to as much as your mechanics and QB abilities come draft time.

Just another guy behind a keyboard.
