Bronco Mendenhall to Virginia

Mendenhall leaving speaks volumes that BYU has figured out they will never be part of a P5 conference. I'm sure the feeling was Mendenhall would be a lifer similar to Lavell Edwards and never entertain another offer. Watch the slide to mediocrity begin.

Give it 3 or 4 years and BYU will be begging for re-admittance to the MWC.

This is bad news for BYU. Their restrictions in recruiting, coaching, etc. make finding players a bitch. Reminds me of Long at SDSU...both fan bases bitch about wanting more than what their coaches give them, but if either of them lost their HC they would be in trouble. That is what faces BYU now. There are very few coaches who can motivate his players like Bronco. Say what you will about his scheming, his players would run through a brick wall for him. No guarantee the next coach has that quality. BYU might just be a big, slow team going forward.

At first blush this seems like a parallel or even backwards move to make. Odd.

A move backwards? Going to a Power 5 school from an independent, a top academic school in the country, and in a great city? Whaaaat?
Money aside, he is moving to a Power 5 school that is consistently at the bottom of a very top heavy ACC. So he makes some money and gets canned in four to five years.

This is not a lateral move for him. BYU will hire their crappy OC or Aaron Roderick (Utah OC).

Coaching at BYU would be hard. Balancing between football and the recruiting restrictions.

Bronco is a lame drone, but he is a great coach. I think BYU takes a huge step back, which I'm okay with.

Bronco got out at perfect time. Move to a P5 conference, a conference that is mediocre overall.

Local sports radio here is fantastic. Most people in total shock.
Could also go the opposite way maybe they will hire a coach like Lavel with a don't ask don't tell approach to the honer code or get a coach like Croken that recruits thugs. Bronco was on top off those boys, I mean men when they would screw up off field he would know about it and deal with them. I would also hope that Bohl would learn some thing from Bronco and fire the defensive coordinator and do the job him self

They're 92-105 since 2000 with five 8+ win seasons.. I wouldn't say they're a consistent at the bottom of the ACC. Schools don't fire coaches because they're successful (unless they're Georgia), so someone out there thinks that Bronco can bring their program to better places than Mike London could.
