Brett Smith Doubtful this weekend

As some of you may already know I handicap sports and I get very fast updates with a couple of sights I pay good money to have subscriptions with for information on player injuries, line moves, weather..etc... all that sorts of stuff.

Anyways I just got a message saying that Brett Smith has been downgraded to "doubtful" this weekend against Idaho. Not sure if he had been upgraded to "questionable" but he has been listed as "doubful" at this point in time. They also said Rex Burkhead was probable for Nebraska and Jamal Franklin was probable for Missouri this weekend. This site is very legit and they always have good info. Not saying things can't change during the week but .....

Unless something major changes throughout the week it sounds like we will be playing with a backup Qb again this week. Probably a good idea for Brett's health. Hopefully we get better production from the QB position this week but very good chance we might be staring 0-4 straight in the face. The good news is that it isn't a conference game :thumb: See.. my glass is half full! ;)

why are we saving him til conference, if he's as tough and awesome as all are saying don't we need him now???

Because dealing with someone's injured brain is much different than an ankle or a knee. It doesn't matter how tough you are if your brain isn't functioning properly.

I say we won't have him until Oct 6th and that game will probably be a massacre just from what I have been hearing from our team and watching from other teams. Slow start to the season, 2 weeks off for injury and then right into the MWC schedule against probably the best 4 MWC teams hands down.

Based on Christensen's clamped asshole about all things media related, this report is probably correct. Thanks for posting it.

Now, on to losing my money.

I like South Carolina still in that game; also looking at ML's for
Utah State
Boise State
AND what I see as huge value: Southern Miss at Western Kentucky starting out at +120.

Hawaii at +10.5 is a very intriguing spread as well. Nevada hasn't won there since 1948. It's like Wyoming in Provo.

If it's a brain problem then why isn't Tormey declared "unavailable" for the next game? And maybe Christenson should be declared "doubtful".

The Spud Chuckers won't run all over the Pokes like Poly did, but will have their moments - in fact enough so that I expect them to pull out a win (note that Pokes are only 1-1/2 in the betting odds)

I will preface this by saying I am in no way an expert on concussions....but if Brett is still having enough issues to be listed as "doubtful" for this week, it makes you wonder what availability he'll have this season.

I've always thought that the damage was worse than they reported. Maybe they were trying to confuse the upcoming opponent.

I got a concussion from a skiing accident this past March. It was a couple weeks before I felt normal and then I started getting headaches. The headaches were diagnosed as a subderral hemotoma, and I had brain surgery in April.

If it was me or my son, I would sit for another week.

Don't forget to mention so everyone understands, subdural hematoma's are often fatal. Second impact syndrome (obtaining a second concussion before a first has healed) often is as well, and happens in people with brains that aren't fully developed. This happens at around 25, Brett is 20.

Let's not rush things.

Yes they are. Often times people are asymptomatic until half their head is filled with blood. I have an uncle who wasn't diagnosed until 4 months after it started. He was slurring his words and had trouble comprehending what he had just written. I heard another story about a guy who went 9 months and was just about to get on a plane to go to his daughters wedding. Doctors said the plane ride likely would have killed him. I was lucky in a way. In my case I had headaches that let me know something was wrong. I never did have any neurological symptoms.

I think he plays
(Freakin Hotel lag, deleting my comment)

Anyways, unless the docs say he's 100%, I'd keep Smith out. If we lose, yeah, it'll be dissapointing, but a player's health (especially with concussions) comes first. The above posts already pointed out the dangers of head injuries, so if Brett is not 100%, let the Freshmen battle it out with Kirk to start. But please, do something more than "screen right" and "screen left."

I think he isnt in contact drills for obvious reasons, but if he is practicing on Tues. He will go on Sat. Not to mention we can not absolutely can not go 0-4 in conf. play 1-3 is bad enough
