Bill Young Wants on Staff???

Sounds like Bill Young wouldn't mind joining the Wyoming Defensive Staff full time.

Young told Spencer it's a short-term job that hopefully is the "start of something."

"Bill, you are 66 years old!" Spencer replied. "But that's just him. He's ready to start something new. I'm happy for him."

It would probably be a good defensive hire.

It should be interested. Kind of a try-before-you-buy kinda deal. I know he is a big 4-3 defense sort of guy - so who knows what he is going to do to our defense. I really really hope he turns it around this year.

I believe the Roach teams used a 4-3.

I know that switching schemes every year or every-other year is crazy.

I also know that Coach Glenn liked the 4-3 but switched to a 3-4 while explaining that it is easier to get enough good linebackers to Laramie than to get enough bigger linemen-types.

I do not know football very well, but it seems like it still boils down to players being where they need to be and then making tackles properly. In that respect, it is not unlike any other sport: Be in the right spot and execute the basic fundamentals when you get there.

As I've stated before, our personnel are undersized for a 3-4 defense. Olive and Mertens are strong, but with both only around 300lbs, they're undersized for NTs but good sized for DTs.

Our DEs, well, they're 4-3 size. A 3-4 defensive end is usually, at minimum, 270lbs or so, and usually bigger (John Fletcher, a DE in a 3-4 defense was 6'7 and 277lbs, made him a good sized DE for a 3-4 defense).

Linebackers, there's usually more leeway there, but OLBs in a 3-4 are 240lbs-260lbs (almost 4-3 DEs really) and MLBs are around 230lbs-240lbs. 4-3, the OLBs are usually smaller, as they generally do more coverage than pass rushing, and MLBs are around the same size as they cover the middle or come up for run support.
