There are probably no "must win" games this early in the college basketball season, but this game today will tell us a lot about what we can expect from this team come conference play. Northern Iowa is a solid team but one that we should beat on a consistent basis if we want to be in the top third of our conference. They were picked to finish 6th out of the 10 Missouri Valley Conference teams. From what I have seen of them they don't have any star players, but they play well together and really have the team concept down well. I feel like we have the better athletes and should be able to get some good shots against their defense. As always, I'm hoping to see some improvement on the defensive end of the court. They only shoot about 30% as a team from behind the arc, and I'm hoping our perimeter defense can hold them to that percentage or lower in the game. Thiam will play his first game as a Poke today, and it sounds like Schroyer expects his biggest contributions to be in the interior defense and rebounding departments, which have been weaknesses so far this year. I'm sure he will make some mistakes as this will be his first game action in a year, but I fully expect this guy to be a HUGE help by the time conference play roles around. He might not be our first offensive option, but the guy has some nice offensive skills and can score if he needs to. He has the potential to be one of the best Cowboy basketball players ever if he continues to develop his game over the next few years like I think he will. I'm very excited about this guy.
