Jim H. was hosting practices and camps in SEC country for a reason. The SEC finally breached the TX border with TAMU. The Big 12 needs to fire back.

The model for Big 12 expansion, if it were to occur, is a no brainer: big (or at least reasonable) markets in the South.

You stay viable as a league by having a marketable TV product and winning. You win by getting better recruits. Recruiting trends are clear (sans Cali): the South is the center of the football universe. Ask yourself where the better TV markets are and what area will appeal to Southern recruits? If you are a Longhorn coach what carries more weight to a Southern recruit: A) You get to play in Provo and Fort Collins or B) You can play near your family in Memphis, Florida, or....?

Cinci might make it in as a "northern" team, but any other option outside of the South is nothing more than la la land dreams by a bunch of butthurt fans who are in clinical denial trying to rationalize why they are better than the rest of the G5 when in fact, they are not.

No argument here. Probably, honestly, more like #11 or #12. But that is the bed our Athletic department (as well as the Academics side of UW - as it certainly plays a role) has made for us.

Lack of vision, piss-poor decisions resulting in fan / booster apathy amongst other tribulations, and working as little as possible (with very unqualified team members) has killed us. Amongst other items already discussed in great detail.

We get left behind this time, it clearly and precisely would point to 10/9/06 as the single largest downfall in Wyoming athletics - EVER. F the black 14, F missing on the Dome in '76...those things are a mouse turd in comparison to the last 10 years of the department & it's operation.

Big 12 should take Cincinnati and Memphis. MWC should take the next best schools out of the AAC. Last 3 weeks of MWC season play should be an 8 team playoff. Have the other teams play in the toilet bowl tournament. (Obviously called something positive like the Developmental Bracket or something. Gives even bad teams a chance to finish years positively.


MWC should try to get byu back in. And Houston is a must. Those 2 teams would help this conference. Hawaii needs to be back in as a full member

I also think AFA ranks high - because of who they are, how many sports they offer, and their national recognition (national brand). Plus they have about 350k more in population than Ft. Collins, and they don't have to compete with CU (like CSewe does).

A lot of my thoughts on attractiveness to a conference come from someone involved with the PAC 10 process of adding 2 teams. They were pretty zeroed in on the 2 they took but I talked to him about MWC schools at that time assuming if they took Utah that they'd also take byu. Boise was laughable to this guy because of the short history and weaker academic and research.

This guy tried to sell me on the schools academic standing as a huge factor and history. The choice of Utah makes sense in everyday but a lot of what he tried to tell me about what they were told about CU made it seem like population totals play the biggest part.

Sdsu is another school that we see as high potential and they have had results lately (becoming a basketball power). But that school is considered a huge tier below the big 4 Cali schools as well.

Highest ceilings: shouldn't this always be a key? Atleast as long as the worst they could become doesn't kill you? Highest ceilings obviously have to be UNLV, and we prob think it should be San Diego and Hawaii. Boise is the team closest to its ceiling, the lowest ceilings are prob Wyoming, Utah st, the 2 garbage Cali schools (sjsu and Fresno)

I would guess a majority of even NCAA fans wouldn't be able to guess what state AFA is in and don't you have to wonder why army or navy have never been wanted by a bigger conference? They are in locations to be involved with several leagues and I'd argue might have more name recognition nationwide than AFA.

Good post, and some solid thoughts. I may be over rating the AFA, as you stated, but I can't compare them to Navy or Army - based primarily on location and population density. AFA is the only western Academy "game in town". Navy and Army - "homes" - are in over-saturated markets (athletically). And with AFA, you get the large Colorado Spings market - as well as some ties to Denver, and all of southern Colorado.
