Best Cowboy QB Ever

We've got ourselves a couple of pretty good QBs... Which has been a rare thing in recent history. I honestly think we've had 3 of the most talented QBs in Cowboy history under Christensen.

Brett Smith is going to break or approach almost every QB record this season. Let the hype begin!

On that note, who do you consider to be the greatest QB in Cowboy history?

B-Smith may not be #1 right now, but at the end of the season he will be hands down #1. Then after his SR year no one will be even close to his numbers.

Stoner was horrid. Ever pass he had was a duck. He could never throw a tight spiral.

Wallwork hands down in my opinion is so far the greatest. He only played two years. Imagine his numbers if we had him all four years. Wallworks td/int ratio his last year was (40-13)

Bramlet put up numbers, but his int's were horrid. In fact I think he has the most int's of any UW QB. td/int ratio's of (9-20 SO), (24-18 JR), and (22-9SR) are not all that great.

Welniak could have had some good numbers had he played in a passing offense that also allowed him to use his legs.

I think if Smith equals or elevates his game these next two years, no one will touch his numbers for a very long time, and he will go down as THE GREATEST.

As much as I liked Craig Burnett and Randy Welniak who helped bring championship teams to Wyoming I would say it is hands down Josh Wallwork and it's not really close.

Wallwork is the only QB at Wyoming to throw for over 4,000 yards in one season and Wyoming ranked first in the nation in passing yards per game that year. Wallwork also ranks 3rd in NCAA history in QB efficiency for a career with a 152.7 rating. He also got the team into a championship game which I think needs to be included when talking about the best.

There have been some other good QB's and some that helped win Championships but I don't think anyone else on the list including the current QB's who are close to what Wallwork did. Brett will have a chance at it for sure and if he can help us win a MWC championship then he will certainly be up there.

I knew Wallwork had some good numbers and had a really good year in 96' and career but I didn't realize he ranked 3rd in Qb efficiency for a career in the history of the NCAA so that can't be overlooked and will take something pretty good to overtake him.

Paul Toscano - 1965-1967. Only Wyoming quarterback to lead the nation in total offense, he took Wyoming to the 1968 Sugar Bowl. He finished in the balloting for the Heisman trophy. For all you youngsters out there, the Cowboy teams of the 1960's, prior to the Black 14 incident in 1969, were better than any Wyoming teams since then.

Brett Smith has a real chance of being the best quarterback ever in Wyoming history, but he has some work to do.

Wasn't Wyoming in that era around the same level as LSU, and Florida now a days?

Well, we went bowling fairly often when it was incredibly difficult to. Had one of the best defenses in NCAA history, including stuffing the run for negative yards total for one season. Often won conference titles.

Did get our lone NCAA sanction because some hot shot punk stole something. Don't remember all the details, but Wyokie should have them.

But, linemen back then were, on average, like 5'11 200lbs or something. Looked like runningbacks, for the most part, compared to what they are now. Players, with some exception of course, were no where as bulky then as they are now.

Gotcha. From everything I have heard, it seems like Wyoming was what was "cool" and "badass" back then. It seems like back then being a Cowboy and being tough in rural cold ass Laramie was cooler than playing in a big city.
My point is that it seemed like players wanted to come to Laramie and Wyoming, and they weren't turned off by the "small town" stuff like big recruits are now.

Of course, hypothetically if Wyo were to go on a tear in the next few years and become the next Boise St. maybe that "Wyo is the place to be" mentality will come back. Winning seems to cure all.

I would love it if Wyo was winning recruiting battles with big time programs, and instead of saying "Nah screw Wyo" they say "Hell yeah Wyo offered me!"

+1

I had Paul Toscano in mind as well. Those years Wyoming was dominate. Wish we were still that good.

You can't be serious. While Stoner played a lot of games, I rank him about dead even with Karsten Sween and Chris Stutzreim.

Right now, I'd go:

Josh Wallwork
Brett Smith
Casey Bramlet

If Brett Smith had Casey's gun...we'd seriously be talking about a potential #1 draft pick. Unfortunately Casey wasn't very selective and was nowhere as good as Brett Smith when it comes to decision making.

THIS

Paul Toscano was a defensive player converted to QB. He led Wyoming to it's greatest heights ever. A lot of us Old Farts on here keep harping about that era of Wyoming football, but I seriously doubt we'll ever get to that level of national relevance again.

My dad played with Toscano. that was the high point of our program when we went to the Sugar Bowl. I have him as #1 followed closely by Josh Wallwork. JW was a beast and that offense was unstoppable.

all respect to Jay Stoner, good guy and decent for a couple years, but he should not be in this conversation.

Brett will break into this list over the next couple of years. Jay Stoner?! May as well put Jeremy Dombeck and Bobby Wright into the conversation!

Stutzreim didn't have a big career as a college player and will probably never have a big career as a pro player, but at least in the future he can think back to that time the Pokes went into Tennessee on HomeComing for the Vols in front of 100K+, and won while he was the starting QB.
If you are going to have a short career, having that win on your belt is pretty cool.

Bobby Wright? Surprised there's anyone out there whose even heard of him unless you're talking about a different guy I haven't heard of.
