Playoff opponents routinely state that a playoff would harm the “most exciting regular season in sports,” in which “every week is a playoff.” If a single loss really can knock a team out of contention for a BCS bowl game, does it make sense for an AQ team to schedule out-of-conference (OOC) games against strong opponents? Common sense suggests no, and indeed, “smart” BCS players appear to schedule as weak of competition as possible. An empirical review of all college football schedules in the BCS Era shows that the “power” teams are more and more prone to schedule cupcake OOC games. Indeed, this review confirms an earlier University of Arkansas study's conclusion that the BCS "creates a strong disincentive" to schedule important regular season contests.
