Baseball probably not coming back to UW

Sounds like it kind of a lukewarm reaction..

Too bad.......possibilities or lack thereof aside, there seems to be a hint of pessimism for UW athletics overall from Senator Larry Hicks. Starting a sentence with "I do think that sometimes people need to deal with reality" is the first sign of a hater.......Newsflash dipshit, contrary to popular belief, Wyoming is not the only state in the U.S. that has rough winters. Most teams fighting the winter issue spend the first month or more of the season in tournaments around the country.

Anyways.....I'm probably reading too much into it, just rubs me the wrong way that someone like that makes hefty decisions for UW.

When I was in school, I had a class with a baseball player before the program was cut. I do not know how a baseball player was able to earn credits given the amount of class time that he had to miss because he was traveling all over the warm-weather states.

It would be great to have baseball, but there was still snow on the ground in Laramie each May when school got out for the summer. Laramie is not like the other cold-weather college towns. The weather in Laramie during June and July is comparable to April in someplace like Lincoln, Nebraska that is equally as far north as Laramie. Basically, June-August is the only time baseball is really viable in Wyoming. I expect that is the reason that the WHSAA does not sanction high school baseball and Legion ball is the lone organized baseball option for high school kids in Wyoming.

Baseball is possible in Laramie. We have proven it and we have a field. It would even be nice to be able to say we have a varsity baseball team again. The problem is that there are other sports that are more viable. It is not like baseball is usually a revenue sport except at a few select schools.

Finally, due to the growing gender gap in enrollments, Title IX compliance indicates that we probably should be looking more toward women's sports rather than men's sports if we are going to add sports at UW.

The dirty little secret is that a domed field would work wonders for baseball in Laramie. I just don't know if it is a good idea.

Personally, I would rather see the University figure out how to bring back skiing, even if it is not a revenue or spectator sport. Hockey would seem to be a natural fit too.

If I got to pick something that is not really viable for UW to throw money at anyway, I would build a medical school before restarting baseball. Wyoming certainly could use another doctor or two.

It would be interesting to see how much it would cost to have these teams. I personally can't imagine them netting positive money, since they'd spend a good part of the season on the road and frankly there won't be 15 or 20 thousand people at a UW baseball or softball game. They didn't get anything like that BITD when there were some pretty darned good teams on the diamond.

If my assumption above is correct, then I don't really support the idea, even though on a personal level I'd love to have baseball and softball back.

I second this. Skiing (Nordics) are a natural fit at UW. Wyoming needs better medical care in areas other than just Casper & Cheyenne as much as we need road maintenance on all our roads. Baseball (including women's softball) would be great, but as WyoExpat said, we really need a domed stadium for that.

State Sen. Larry Hicks, R-Baggs, said it wasn’t realistic to try and play baseball during a Wyoming winter.

“I do think that sometimes people have to deal with reality. The fact is, there’s a reason they surf in Hawaii and they run dog sleds in Alaska,” Hicks said. “I would suggest that maybe we could revisit this in maybe 10 years, with global warming the way it is.”

What a smartass douchebag sonofabitch. And there you have it UW fans. Small time uneducated thinking, and overall general lack of concern toward UW athletics, shown plainly for all to read in black & white.

Hicks...question for you...if your so GD smart...how did it survive for 50+ years prior to 1996? Oh, and how about a positive spin, like why don't you suggest they look at fully funding Alpine & Nordic skiing!

GD this pisses me off.

If Golf gets an indoor facility why not baseball? (sarcastically: I do realize that the golf facility is relatively small) If there is one sport I'd love to see return it is baseball. Football and Baseball are the only two sports I follow, unless nascar really is a sport...

Title IX sucks. College baseball should be a part of UW athletics, period.

If I was running things, I'd re-add the skiing teams and dump golf (we don't even host our own golf tournaments in the state!).

As for baseball......sorry, guys, I'm just not a baseball guy!

I heard on GWG a few years before this site got started that softball was dropped in 1986 (or around about that time) due to the players and the coaches were getting to know each other a little TOO much. But may have been the rumor.

I agree with the guy and am glad that baseball is way down on the list of priorities when it comes to UW sports. He is a UW grad, so he's got a little something going for him at least besides his awesome name.

If there was ever a more perfect example of an aptronym, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aptronym besides Thomas Crapper, Seymore Butts or Anthony Weiner, this guy is it.

Hicks. http://legisweb.state.wy.us/LegislatorSummary/LegDetail.aspx?LegID=1963

It is unfortunate that the only baseball available here is the club team, but I have to agree that it may not be the best idea at the moment. If a men's sport is to be added hockey seems like the best fit.

But hey, come support the club team, maybe if enough people show support for the club baseball team a varsity baseball team will appear more and more practical for the school.

For what it is worth, the club team is still U.W. students playing baseball to represent the school. We would not all of a sudden become Arizona State if we hired a varsity coach and gave out scholarships. Therefore, the club team still represents the essence of college sports. Harvard has a Top 25 basketball team this year that is built on some of the club team principles.
