When I was in school, I had a class with a baseball player before the program was cut. I do not know how a baseball player was able to earn credits given the amount of class time that he had to miss because he was traveling all over the warm-weather states.
It would be great to have baseball, but there was still snow on the ground in Laramie each May when school got out for the summer. Laramie is not like the other cold-weather college towns. The weather in Laramie during June and July is comparable to April in someplace like Lincoln, Nebraska that is equally as far north as Laramie. Basically, June-August is the only time baseball is really viable in Wyoming. I expect that is the reason that the WHSAA does not sanction high school baseball and Legion ball is the lone organized baseball option for high school kids in Wyoming.
Baseball is possible in Laramie. We have proven it and we have a field. It would even be nice to be able to say we have a varsity baseball team again. The problem is that there are other sports that are more viable. It is not like baseball is usually a revenue sport except at a few select schools.
Finally, due to the growing gender gap in enrollments, Title IX compliance indicates that we probably should be looking more toward women's sports rather than men's sports if we are going to add sports at UW.
The dirty little secret is that a domed field would work wonders for baseball in Laramie. I just don't know if it is a good idea.
Personally, I would rather see the University figure out how to bring back skiing, even if it is not a revenue or spectator sport. Hockey would seem to be a natural fit too.
If I got to pick something that is not really viable for UW to throw money at anyway, I would build a medical school before restarting baseball. Wyoming certainly could use another doctor or two.
