Another Wyoming walk on...punted?

Yep. For 4A (largest division) there are 10 teams, total. The top 8 seeds advance to the playoffs. Wyoming has this same disadvantage for all sports though. To reach the little league world series regional finals in San bernardino, CA the wyoming teams needs to win only 1 tournament while teams from other states have seemingly endless tournaments months in advance. This same lack of experience can be to blame for wyoming not being historically successful there either.
That's ridiculous. Is there a major gap between 3A and 4A? Seems like four would be too many classes, but maybe it's warranted there.

BTW there's 7 classes of football in Minnesota (9-man to 6A)

9-Man: 70 teams
1A: 58 teams
2A: 61 teams
3A: 54 teams
4A: 46 teams
5A: 48 teams
6A: 32 teams

I don't have numbers in front of me, but before I moved here I attended 2 years of hs in southern California at an average size school with an enrollment of around 3,700. So of course, with not a single school over 2,000 enrollment in the entire state it seemed odd to me to have 5 divisions for football. Especially when teams travel huge distances to play each other when there are sometimes closer schools with enrollment that isn't much different. But I only spent 2 years involved with wyoming high school athletics so what do I know haha

Wyoming has 5 football classes now. 6 man, 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. 6 man and 1A both compete the same class for basketball and other sports and are very similar schools, and I'm not positive but when it first came along teams had the choice to play 11 or 6 man. Those are the smallest of the small up to towns of 1500 or 2000. My senior year we were the smallest team in 11 man football, and between trouble with grades and kids quitting or getting hurt we finished the year with 13 guys playing 11 man football. 2A is teams like Wheatland, Newcastle, Lovell, and Mountain View-towns of around 2500 to about 4 or 5000. 3A is from Buffalo probably being the smallest (4500) to Green River being the biggest, and just recently dropping from 4A with about 12,000 people. Then 4A goes from Laramie and Evanston to Casper Cheyenne and Gillette. I know population doesn't directly show the size of the schools but it gives an idea anyway.

If you wanna break it down by class, like you did for MN,

6 Man-13 Teams
1A-15 teams
2A-14 teams
3A-12 teams
4A-10 teams

All classes have 8 playoff teams

Also, one of the better teams in 1A, Upton-Sundance, joined football teams 3 years ago. So that would really be the biggest in 1A by a long ways, with 183

The shocking thing is that Gillette only has four football championships. Sheridan has 23. since 1990 Sheridan has won more football championships than Gillette or Natrona. So for the most part football has been competitive.

Really? Only four? I'm surprised. I still think the school boards, administrators, and whoever else is in charge with the Casper and Gillette school districts are cowards and cheaters. Kudos to Cheyenne for playing fair when Casper and Gillette don't.

Yep, only four total championships. They dominated basketball and wrestling though. I agree it's unfair what how casper and Gillette have operated. Sheridan can compete because they hire a professional coach in football and they have an expectation that their football teams will win. Sheridan 's won past championships at 3A and was on Glenn's staff at Wyoming.

Don't forget a very active booster club spearheaded by the generosity of the Scott family.

Just as a note on these numbers, depending on your source, the enrollments listed from the MSHSL only represent the enrollment of 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. This was definitely the case in the late 90s-early 2000s, when I was in HS, as my school kept bouncing back and forth between 5A and 6A for football, based on how big the new incoming freshmen class was. While it may have changed since then, looking at some of the recent numbers for schools I'm more familiar with, it still looks like its only 9th-11th grade numbers.

So, a school with an enrollment of 1500 very likely has on the order of 2000 total students in the high school, for comparison with the numbers you posted for Wyoming schools.
