Another one bites the dust

I see James Davis has left the team. So we just spent 3 plus years of scholarship money on a player that got a total of what, 4 touches in his career. This is one case where I, a CJC supporter, would like to know why. In the plays that he got to carry the ball he looked as good as the 2 other backs we are using. I think this puts us at about 67 scholarship players. I think the limit for D-1aa (fcs) is 63. This staff better get to work. :brick:

Here is the Laramie Paper article on the topic (from Gags).

Not sure where the "blame" should go exactly, but my thoughts are...the previous staff.

I think it's rather obvious why a lot of the kids have left - they can't deal with the strict and tough workout schedule. There are both good and bad things about that. Some kids just aren't practice/workout players - Bouknight was one of those (it ultimately doomed his pro career). This means you have to make sure the kids you recruit have very high levels of work ethic. Unfortunately, it means the ones who don't will walk away. The positive obviously is that once you've filled the pipelines with hard workers, you can make up for a lower level of talent overall.

Air Force is the perfect example of a team that is successful because of hard work and discipline. Their benefit is that the attrition won't be nearly as bad as kids expect a very high level of effort to be required in the military. Also, I believe Boise State is actually another team who's done really well in recruiting kids who are willing to work very hard to prove the world wrong about their potential for success. I think we can get there too... and beyond.

Good point about AFA. They're not a big team, or a fast team, but they're a damned athletic team who goes through more rigorous daily routines than the average college football player. They make up for a lot of weaknesses by working hard. Personally, I'm happy to see the slackers leave.. if this team is going to improve, especially given the situation of UW, it's going to have to be done by hard working kids who want to be there every day.. not guys who think they can get by on talent alone.

Retention is a significant issue. That is something that has bit the NDSU coach in the ass the past couple years as well. These coached have to be able to RECRUIT and RETAIN good players. It makes no difference how good a recruiting class is if you loose them all.

Just read Gag's article.. the comments from readers are funny.. bring back Joe Glenn.. he was nicer to players!!

I saw that.....how foolish! I would love to see Joe Glenn working for the foundation.

I agree that DC's strict program has contributed to the high level of attrition since he arrived, but I think we would be amiss not to mention another contributor to the problem...he seems to favor the players he recruited over the players who were already in the program when he arrived.

One good example of that, which has already been brought up, is James Davis. I specifically remember DC justifying Alexander seeing more playing time over Darius Terry (captain) based upon the two RB's YPC average. Against SUU, Alexander averaged 3.1 yards per carry while Davis averaged 7.0 yards per carry. One would think that would warrant Davis at least getting the oppurtunity to see more touches, but instead, Davis saw only one carry in the Texas game and none in the BSU game.

Another example that caught my attention (and one that I brought up at the time it happened) is the seemingly opposite ways he has handled injuries and how those affect the players position on the depth chart. If you guys recall, Fred Givens was injured and missed nearly all of spring practice in 2009. At the conclusion of spring drills, Givens was listed as a back-up and most posters dismissed it assuming Givens would win the job back in the fall. However, the way DC handled the Kankolongo injury was totally different. If you recall, DC stated several times that he wouldn't move Kankolongo down the depth chart because of his injury.

I do want to clarify that I'm not trying to bash on DC. I still think he was a great hire and his strengths far outweigh his weaknesses. I'm simply trying to point out another possible contributor that I hadn't seen anybody mention yet. Fell free to agree or disagree.

Did Glenn ever have a senior class with more than 10 players? Its part of college football and particularly part of a transformation to a new coach. The rest, I think DC knows a million times more than anybody on this board why he plays certain players and I seriously doubt if it has anything to do with who recruited them. Football coaches want to win and I'm sure any loyalty their own reqruits goes right out the window if a better option is available. Why would they bring in JC players that displace their own High School recruits?

Something wrong with that?! Seems to be the UW way of handling coaching transitions. Look at well it worked for Schroyer. :tickedoff:

Really? I was told he was going to RS this year. Give him some more time to heal from the injury. Also, read where he was indeed suspended from the team, prior to SUU, for an "indefinite" period of time.
