Alumni event w/ Burman, Arroyo and English

Just got back from "An Evening with UW" in Scottsdale. President of the foundation talked, Buchanan talked, then gave up the mic to Burman who introduced Aroyyo. (this should probably go in the football board, sorry)

He didn't have really much of anything to say. Talked for about 5 minutes (maybe) and said very little. Basically that the Pokes will get better, the coaching staff isn't satisfied, and look out for next year. He then gave the mic to English.

Marty talked a tiny bit about recruiting, most (or all) of what he said is public, I think. Let's see if I can get all this right. They got 5 new O linemen, 5 new D linemen, a running back from Canada, a linebacker from Somoa, a something from Germany, and then gave the stat that 80% of recruits that set foot on campus sign. He said they filled every need they have, so they're happy with that. Said they knew they were lacking big in the WR dept, so they got a couple junior college kids there. Also said that "this team is 10 times faster than they were" so that will help out a lot. Oh, and they're going to a 4-3 defensive set so they recruited to fill holes they would need in doing that.

Then Burman got up to talk. He was very rah rah on the football team. Went to New Mexico, won, we kick ass, aren't we great, aren't I doing a great job? Then he commented on wrestling being in the Top 25, talked about how the Cowgirls had a down year last year, but this year they will go to post season play, most likely the WNIT and just had a great win against SDSU. He then talked about women's swimming, and how they finished 2nd in the conference, which is the highest any swimming team at UW has ever finished, and commented that the facilities aren't as nice as he'd like. And then, oh yes, and THEN..... He thanked the crowd and walked off stage. Seriously. Not even a squeak about men's basketball. In total, he talked for about 5-7 minutes.

So I guess if you ignore the problem, it'll go away?

That is interesting. Tells a lot about a man. People appreciate and respect you (they may not like you) when you own things (accountability) and are honest. Damn.

Ole Tommy Boy failed to step up to the plate again huh? Figures.
English says they filled every spot they needed..did I miss a recruit that can kick?

In my opinion, if you want to energize the crowd and get them pumpped about Wyoming athletics, you don't talk about your down programs. Every program you said Burman talked about is in an upswing. Football, swimming, women's bb, wrestling are all doing well. I'll bet he didn't talk about volleyball.

Just my opinion, but you can't knock the guy for not talking about basketball.

I agree to some point but don't you think maybe drop a one liner? Something like we are striving to bring a few more programs where they need to be, or maybe we look to the future to have all of our programs at this level? How can you just totally ignore your #1 or #2 sport, depending on who you talk to, and pretend all is well in paradise? I think the fans want to hear SOMETHING, good, bad, or indifferent.
And since when is Legerskis program on an upswing? Been pretty much the premiere program for several years now.

....don't we have a kicker?

Yes, we have a kicker on the roster. I was hoping that we could bring someone in on kick-offs that could consistently get the ball inside the 10. Or better yet, in the end zone like the majority of MWC kickers do.
We were dead last in kick-off return coverage, a full 13 yards on the average behind league leading Utah. Pin that stat on the kicker since EVERY kick-off was returned. Field position has really killed us. Nothing takes the air out of a score more than kicking off and giving your opponent the ball on the 40.

Ian Watts will be that guy. From what I've heard, he can consistenty kick it into the endzone. Don't know why we went with Scott this year, but we will be fine at kicker.
