Air Force Attendance

Air Force attendance was just over 21,000. Pretty good turnout for that late of a kickoff. No complaints there and something we should keep expecting if we keep winning.

Good showing by the students - and they were loud. I was surprised by the number of Wyoming fans from all over the state. My hat is off to them. They saw one hell of a game and it was a great atmosphere.

And performances like these first two games will only keep fans coming back for more.

Fans don't want to come to games if by the end of the 3rd quarter the margin is consistently 21-28 points, whether winning or losing. Fans need a reason to not leave early, as sad as that may sound. If the game is close and competitive, they will stick around. And they'll keep coming back because there's a good chance of another close game the following week. If not, they'll leave early knowing they won't miss much action from the game and dreading a 5-hour drive ahead.

Looking up last year's games, the home games were +32, +28, +7, -30, -38 and +3. So two games where there was reason for fans to possibly stay the entire game for a close finish.

BTW, I'm still very impressed that there were over 25k at the Montana game.

Looking back at previous years, the only games to get over 25,000 fans at WMS in last 15 years:

September 24, 2011 - Nebraska
September 18, 2010 - #3 Boise State
September 12, 2009 - #2 Texas
September 1, 2007 - Virginia
October 8, 2005 - Texas Christian
September 29, 2001 - Colorado State
November 13, 1999 - #12 Brigham Young

Basically, it takes a major-conference opponent, a top-15 team, or a battle for first place (2005) to get fans to come out like they did Week 1. The lone exception is CSU in 2001, which was the first Wyoming home game following 9/11.

That doesn't normally happen against a team like Montana.

I don't think that the BYU game was merely because BYU happened to be in the top-15. They and CSU always drew better than other teams. (i.e. note that the Texas A&M game is not on this list). I think we had high hopes of winning the conference in 1999 but collapsed down the stretch.

I think that the fact that Montana is a border state and has a good reputation--even if at FCS--made a difference.
