ACS vs. Benjamin

For someone who's seen them play, can you tell me how they've looked, what their strengths/weaknesses are, etc.?

Let me state up front that I have NOT seen either of them play. The reports that I'm hearing/reading are that Benjamin is the number one, but ACS is qucikly climbing the charts. From what I hear, ACS is probably the most athletic QB, but could use a year to gain some maturity.

While I want DC to put the best player on the field regardless of age or status, I'm hoping that he plays Benjamin and redshirts ACS. Having a more mature, athletic QB with a year to truly learn DC's system who can give us four years sounds like a godsend to me. I know that DC wants to win, and I do too, but I beleive that redshirting ACS would turn out best in the long run.

I'm so looking forward to seeing this team play on the 5th. Can't get here soon enough!

GO POKES!

I'm of the opinion that unless ACS goes in as the #1 QB this year, he should redshirt. It'd be kind of a waste to have him burn a year of eligibility to ride the pine as 2nd string.

One thing - For some reason I thought ACS was a little small and needed some time in the weight room - but he's 6-2, 210 pounds, just about the same as Benjamin.

Having stood by him...he must have had platforms on or something to be measured 6'2". Unless I suddenly grew 6 or 7 inches, he doesn't appear that tall. Not sure it matters though.

I will tell you this...it is going to be damn tough for Benjamin to hold off ACS this year. I expect Benjamin to be atop the depth chart come Tuesday with ACS listed as the backup, but ACS will see playing time early. Depending on how he performs in those game situations, he will either take over the starting spot full time or slowly be filtered off the field. I'd say there is only a 5% chance ACS is redshirted and that is only because there is a slight chance he might get injured before Sept. 5th. It is clear that ACS is the most talented QB on our roster. Give him another month to work with his personel and learn the playbook and he will be the best overall QB on the roster. I don't care about having him for one extra year. CJ Bennett and Sam Stratton are both studs that will give him a run for his money as soon as next year. The best 3 QB's of the last 10 years will all be on the roster next year...and I'm not kidding.

I was counting down until you posted in this thread. You've been really high on ACS since the day he announced he was a Cowboy. :thumb:

I've thought about this a bit. I've come to the conclusion that I want the best players available this year. If we were to be in the middle of a successful season and #1 QB gets hurt, I want the 2nd best QB to come onto the field giving us the best chance to win out.

My reasoning is this... If DC is capable of recruiting 2 QBs that can come in, learn his difficult offense, and be successful the first season he & they are here, then I believe that he can recruit a replacement for ACS (or whomever is the best player at the time) and have him game ready after graduation.

Of course, the season has yet to start and no one has proven themselves. Here's to a great Cowboy football season.

I just think UW went out and searched for and hired the best coach they could find (Dave Christensen). Whoever he decides to play is his decision and I don't think he is taking it lightly. He probably has more insight into the whole picture than any of us. I'm not going to second-guess him. It doesn't always turn out great (the last 9 years), but he is the man making the decisions and he and we are trying to get more W's.

WellPoke, I've been to the scrimmages and though ACS is athletic, Benjamin seems a bit more athletic and he certainly seems to have a stronger arm. I still like ACS a great deal. He makes good, quick decisions, and is very composed. What impresses me most about him is his feel for the game; he seems to be able to read a defense and he makes the right play almost all the time. He's confident, but he's not reckless as many frosh QB's are. Benjamin on the other hand throws a beautiful deep ball and with his arm strength and running ability he can make some spectacular plays. Though Benjamin also has good composure, he is a bit careless at times and that may have to do with the fact that he's played with JC players for 2 years and the fact that he's been in the system even less time than ACS.

I guess what I'm saying is each QB has strong suits, but I have a sneaky suspicion that ACS will play this year if Benjamin struggles early on. If Benjamin can limit his mistakes, I have no doubt that he will be a great QB for us. But given that ACS is a frosh and has shown so much potential, I don't think DC will think twice about putting ACS in if Benjamin struggles.

One should also be aware that Benjamin possibly poses an academic casualty risk.
All the more reason to keep ACS on the ready.

I'm looking forward to seeing the team play on Sat., and seeing the QBs specifically. Like I said, I want the best player on the field, and I would never pretend to know more about the team than DC. Especially with not having seen anybody in person. I would just hate to see ACS not play much this year and lose the year of eligibility. I have a sneaking suspicion that because ACS hasn't been redshirted yet, that DC intends to play him. I wasn't aware of the other 2 QBs coming in, as I haven't followed the recruiting news as closely this year. RealUW, if Bennet and Stratton are that good, maybe ACS's redshirt is not that important.

Either way, I want to win as soon as possible, and I'll rely on DC to put the best players on the field to accomplish that. Looking forward to Sat!

GO POKES!
