This is the 5th time I have tried to post it but Wyonation still seems to be having some problems.

Anyways.

5 weeks til gameday.

My 5 questions for the Wyo this season are:

5. How deep will the WR group be? Will the RS-freshmen like Nico Brown and Trent Sewell have an impact this season?

4. Will the Pokes have a running game? Will there be a standout? Or will it be RB by committee?

3. Will the O-Line protect B-Smith? Will the o-line be decent? If they are decent B-Smith could put up some Heisman type numbers. If the O-Line is genuinely good, we could see DC's best Mizzou offense in Laramie wearing brown and gold.

2. Will Thompson be red-shirted this season? No need to burn a red shirt on Thompson if Smith only needs to come out of the game for a play or two, or if Wyo is up big in a blowout at the end of the game.

1. DEFENSE! Does it exist? Will the switch back to the 3-4 be a improvement? Can the defense be average, or dare I say it, actually good? Can the secondary be ball-hawks like they were a couple seasons ago?

I think Coach has said that Thompson will RS this season, if Smitty doesn't get hurt. He will be ready to play every game, but won't put him in unless necessary.

I know he is planning to red-shirt, but will it actually happen.

5. How deep will the WR group be? Will the RS-freshmen like Nico Brown and Trent Sewell have an impact this season? Not this this year. Smith has his favs.

4. Will the Pokes have a running game? Mediocre. Especially after losing one already Will there be a standout? Or will it be RB by committee? Smith is our "running back." Meaning he will be "running back...and forth trying to avoid a sack"

3. Will the O-Line protect B-Smith? See #4 Will the o-line be decent? If they are decent B-Smith could put up some Heisman type numbers. I love your homerism, but you gotta win to get Heisman looks. If the O-Line is genuinely good, we could see DC's best Mizzou offense in Laramie wearing brown and gold.

2. Will Thompson be red-shirted this season? My guess is that he burns his redshirt. Smith will have a few games recovering from running for his life No need to burn a red shirt on Thompson if Smith only needs to come out of the game for a play or two, or if Wyo is up big in a blowout at the end of the game.

1. DEFENSE! Does it exist? Will the switch back to the 3-4 be a improvement? Can the defense be average, or dare I say it, actually good? All depends on LB corps Can the secondary be ball-hawks like they were a couple seasons ago?

Questions 3 and 1 are the most essential. We must protect Brett and we must improve on defense. Dead horse i know. I am so tired of teams running the ball for 7+ yards EVERYTIME. It is pure torture. I Am trying my absolute best to not drink the kool aid but I believe we have some players that can do some good things for us. I'm holding out hope that some of those redshirts will pan out and make an immediate impact. I think your question 4 will also be important. If we have any kind of running game at all I think we could be scary good on offense.

For me the O-Line holds the answer to most of those questions.

They need to do MANY things. Give Brett time in the pocket. That way Smith can throw the ball all over the field. They need to protect him, that way we have him! And Thompson's RS doesn't get burned. They need to open up holes for the RBs so we can actually find out if maybe we do have some good RBs. Even if the defense isn't that good, but the O-Line is, the Pokes can still win a lot of games. Maybe they will win 49-48 every game, but if the O-Line does their job in protecting Smith, giving Smith time, and opening holes for the RBs the Pokes can win a lot.
I know that is a lot to ask of the O-Line, but hell it shouldn't be, that's what O-Lines are supposed to do.
Good O-Line with a bad defense will mean, a lot of high scoring, fun and nerve-racking games, and probably quite a few wins.

Beaver,
Great questions. I also like your answers (and those of Dutch). Defense and O-line are the crucial areas of concern. Most important is the play of the O-line.

Its axiomatic that the game is won in the trenches. A great O-line allows for many dimensions to an offense, and increases time of possession (and defensive effectiveness).

If this group of JC recruits is as good as DC says they will be (and unfortunately nothing out of Laramie to date indicates they are :( ) then we will sneak up on the MWC. We have all the weapons on offense, and will challenge USU with a good O-line. We might win 10 games, finish second in the Mountain division, and get a good bowl.
BUT-if our line is not significantly improved- we will have to stay in a short passing game out of the spread-Brett will be sacked 25-40 times-our defense will be tired in the 4th quarter and injury riddled at the end of the season-and we will finish no better than 6-6-and probably worse.

Our D line is OK, but wont be able to go toe to toe with the O-lines of Boise, Nebraska and Utah State. If they are on the field all day, it could get ugly...

So yeah, I'm drinking the kool aid if our O-line is improved. I think our Defense is good enough to keep us in the game with almost anyone on the schedule if our Offense is rolling.

But we aint rolling anywhere with a crappy O-line..

I think the WR are loaded with talent. They can go three deep at every position pretty easy and not loose a thing. However it is hard to match the speed or Heron! My son Tanner Simpson has spent all summer with this group of people and it is truly incredible how talented they really are.

Jarhead, I think Tanner will be very good, and be a big fan favorite, but with the depth of the WR's right now, and for the next couple years, do you think Tanner will catch more passes from Brett Smith or Jason Thompson in his career?

Not that Tanner is bad by any means, just that there are SO MANY good players in that group, Tanner included.

Oh, no doubt it will be Jason. Although Tanner spends a great deal of time with Brett catching balls outside of practice.

Good to hear. I'm glad that the Pokes have talent on the team outside of B-Smith and the starting WR's.
Pokes need a big season, this year!
I believe the RBs are probably pretty talented, I trust that DC knows what he is doing. Just need some consistent O-Line play, then the Pokes could be set for a few years to come.
