2nd Scrimmage observations.

Just got home from the scrimmage and first all of the young players look great.

Eddie Yarbrough is going to be a monster. He had 3 sacks (I don't really like how they call some sacks in these scrimmages, sure they touch the QB but doesn't always look like they would have come up with the sack) . Built like a DT but has speed to get around the edge. Korey Jones also got good pressure on the QB when he blitzed. Looks like he has good speed.

The 2 true freshman WRs Doctson and Norman looked like they could make an early impact. Doctson is a big target with great hands. He made a one handed catch and got drilled and still held on. Rufran looked pretty good too. Herron didn't look great today but it could have just been a bad day.

The RB's looked good. Brandon Miller had a 50 something yard run and seemed to always get at least 7 yards. He was by far the best today. I love they way Sutton runs, He also had a long run. AA didn't do much but had a few good runs, honestly looked like the defense just made the plays against him, not his fault.

Now for the QB's
Brett Smith started off slow but when he found his groove looked good. He threw a pick on the first drive but it looked like it was more of a good play by Eric Mitchell than a bad play by smith. He should have a rushing TD to his stats for the day but got touched by the defender, though he would have beat him. He runs the read option head and shoulders better than ACS did. He showed good touch on his deep throws, just a step ahead of the WR. Not too many deep balls thrown all day from any QB.

Pittser has a cannon. He missed a few throws bad but showed he can thread the needle over the middle. He had great pocket pressence and got "sacked" a few times that shouldn't have counted as sacks. He showed pretty decent ability to scramble.

Kirrrkkkeegaarsd (sp?) was good at scrambling and his short throws but was consistently short on his throws over 15 yds with no speed on the ball. Seems like he can play but will never do anything special.

Sounds like Pittser is starting to get the hang of things. But Capt. Kirk (not going to bother even TRYING to spell his name) may be more of a back up guy.

What about TD drives?

the offense didnt look great in the redzone and I dont remember exactly everything but Smith threw a TD pass to Ogbonna but all the credit goes to Mazi, it was pretty much a 3rd effort TD. Like I said Smith should have had a rushing TD but barely got touched.

Good stuff, thanks for posting all of that.

Why do i feel like Capt Kirk is going to turn into the next Dax Crum? The wild Kirk anyone?
It sure would be nice if Crum had one more year of eligibility so it would give these freshman some more time to work with the system.

You forgot a very integral part of those stats. Keeping the play alive by running.
Smith 11-15-0
Kirkegaard 10-(-45)-0
Pittser 13-(-71)-0

Pittser played a heck of a lot better today, but still has quite a ways to go.
Kirkegaard has really impressed me with his numbers, but throwing outside of 15 yards down field he struggles.
Smith just seems to have this offense down, and is playing with confidence. I saw the int and it was a great defensive play to intercept that pass.

On another note, stats for our RB's
Alexander 24-104-3 Receptions: 5-41-0
Sutton 23-114-0 Receptions: 4-16-0
Miller 19-146-2 Receptions: 7-77-1
Easton 24- 84-0 Receptions: 3-29-0

Miller is fighting for playing time, he may see a lot of minutes this year. Alexander is kind of reminding me of last year, minimal gain here, minimal gain there, break a big one. Sutton is going to see some playing time as well. He is a fast little bugger. but when he gets caught it hasn't taken much to take him down. Easton has also done surprisingly well, but not good enough to up himself in the depth chart.

Receivers:
Ogbanna 8-150-2
Herron 11-124-0
Stratton 11-112-1
Bruce 6- 75-1
Rufran 12-65-0
McNeill 4-45-0
Morgan 4-31-0

Ogbanna seems to be playing like our go to guy. I think we'll see big numbers out of him this year. Herron, will be a make or break type receiver with his speed. Most of his receptions come from being out in the flat where he must go one on one with the defender. Stratton might be a good go to guy as well. Bruce although injured today has really impressed me the most. I think he may be a great TE for us. McNeill has been a disapointment thus far. And the others are coming along, but will see limited playing time.

Go Pokes! looking forward to a great season!

McNeil has always been the Possession type of reciever, not a lot of speed, but good hands. Good for getting small chunks of yards. Of course last year, Leonard with his size and hands was the go to guy, big target good hands, just not much speed.
