I opened the Cal Poly-Wyoming GTS thread to make another total crap prediction for our next game. I missed the Toledo score by a mile and the Texas score by a half mile, so I didn’t bother. But it got me thinking, that the next two games might just be the two most important of the Christensen era. I never would have thought this a couple weeks ago, but I think Cal Poly and Idaho could determine our season and maybe our near future. In 2009 hardly any of us were expecting much, but the next thing you know we were rushing the field at the end of the New Mexico Bowl. We had higher hopes in 2010, but also knew we were facing one tough-ass schedule, without the luxury of sneaking up on anyone. After the season we lost some key players and didn’t know what to expect in 2011, but not having a QB with any experience on the roster looked bleak. The only ones that knew we were okay were these new fans from Oregon. Besides ending our season with a thumping, I would say that most of us were overall pleased.
Admittedly, I drank the Kool-Aid this year. I still don’t get the DC hype. To me, he’s an assistant coach at best, who was in the right place at the right time… However, our young and inexperienced staff has been getting more experience, and better yet, getting the boot and being replaced by guys with tons of experience. Then you combine this with a repaired, larger, more experienced Smith and what looked to be a softer schedule, as well as the deepest, fastest, talented team in years, 10-2 looked possible, 9-3 maybe and 8-4 worse case.
If we lose either of these two games, with or without Smith at QB, we go into the meat of our schedule at 1-3. It could just implode and we end up 2-6 or 1-7 going into the easier part of our schedule with little confidence. This could cause another stumble or two, no bowl game, tougher recruiting, etc.
If we win these two convincingly, we could be back on track and have a successful season. We need to win these next two games, hopefully by a wide margin!
