There are 5 teams in the MWC that are Big Dance or NIT candidates, and those 5 are the top 5 teams in the conference standings.
Assessments:
San Diego State has the path to the MWC Championship due to their win over Wyoming in Laramie. They are playing some really strong basketball and I think they should be a Top 25 team. They should be favorites to win the rest of their games unless something unforeseen happens to their team, but their (lack of) offense might be what causes them to drop a game or two that they shouldn't, like they already have this season.
Wyoming is tied with San Diego State but has been skating on thin ice lately. A couple overtime games back to back that could have EASILY gone the other way would have Wyoming down tied for 6th place at 5-4, but they won. The Pokes have MWC Player of the Year candidate Larry Nance Jr. who gets his points and rebounds almost every game regardless of how the rest of the team plays. Wyo lives and dies by the 3. When Grabau and Hankerson are hitting their shots, Wyo is really hard to beat, when they are not, it is hard for Wyo to find an offensive identity besides 15 to 20 or so from Nance. Depending on whether you are the optimist or pessimist, your views of this team differ greatly.
Optimist: Wyo has been sneaking out wins even without playing their best. Imagine when they start clicking.
Pessimist: Wyo is getting lucky and will fall back to reality real soon.
New Mexico had a very disappointing OOC results, but has since played really well. They are 1 bad pass away from trading places with Wyoming at the top of the MWC. They are starting to be a real threat to teams, and proving why they have won 3 straight MWC Tourney Championships, and finished no worse than 2nd the last 3 years as well. As this team starts knocking off more and more MWC teams, all it is doing is giving a giant more and more confidence.
Colorado State played a weak OOC schedule, but won every OOC game they had. Since MWC play started, they got ranked, then lost two games in a row, one to New Mexico and one to Wyoming. They have since turned it around and gotten out of their little slump and have only lost 1 game since, which was at Boise State. They have a team an undisciplined team on the court and have earned quite the reputation in MWC play.
Boise State had decent results in OOC play until their final OOC game which started a 4 game losing streak that included 3 MWC games. Sine then they have not lost, and have gone from an under-performing team to a legitimate threat to find themselves at the top of the standings at seasons end. They do not have any byes the rest of the way as they have played 8 games, and have 10 left. So if they get tired from playing every 3 or 4 days the rest of the season, they may drop a game they shouldn't.
Lot's of season left for the teams in the MWC, but I hope that all 5 of these teams find themselves in the NCAA Tourney and NIT.
Any off night by a team can lead to their seasons goals being out of reach, meanwhile propelling someone else's to a reality. Can't wait to see if Wyoming gets their first MWC title since Marcus Bailey and Josh Davis, GO POKES!
